Whatever smart devices are. One might guess you talk of devices using different variants of IGMP multicast for device discovery, communications, ... like say Chromecast?

Re: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.26 - Hot Fix - breaks smart devices

I have:  R7000 as router, Yamaha CD-NT670 as music player, iPhone SE (x2) with Yamaha MusicCast controller installed, TV LG LF592V. All connected with WiFi 2,4 GHz.

After firmware upgrade to 1.0.9.26, I was not able to connect between any of my devices, including ping any of it or obtain IP via DHCP from the router on Yamaha. As I saw the description of 1.0.9.26 Hot Fix, there are some fixes to the Wi-Fi disconnect issue caused by a flood of broadcast traffic and security fixes as well. For now, I can not debug the traffic on 1.0.9.26 again, so I can not say that IGMP multicast is the only problem.

Did you reset the router to factory settings after the firmware flash?

New firmware sometimes introduces changes that are not compatible with the old configuration.

So while it isn't guaranteed to fix problems a factory reset is the first thing to try if you have issues with new firmware.

This can be especially try for wifi, if that is the issue. There's a steady trickle of messages here from people who fixed wifi with a reset.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and
look for Downloads.  Under "Pick a Topic" (NOT under "Firmware and
Software Downloads"), look for "Security Hotfix Downloads (Beta
Firmware)".

It's probably not how I would have organized these things, but that's
not unusual.

Ahh I see... If it is an issue id just go back to the firmware that was working

Visit the support pages:

Nighthawk R7000 | AC1900 Smart WiFi Router | NETGEAR Support

Read the Top Support Articles.

There is some logic to Netgear's strategy. New firmware goes through a quality assurance process that takes time. If it has been testing new firmware with beta victims, that won't have been through the QA mill. In effect, a Hit Fix has been beta tested by not QA'd.

There's a chance that a Hot Fix won't make it through QA. Or something newer will come along. So a Hot Fix may never make it on to the list of published firmware.
