R7000 - Limiting Lan Speeds and I figured out why -- Its the Access Control Feature

Its the Access Control being enabled

So about a month ago I noticed that my speeds dropped dramatically. I specifically noted that no matter what I did, I couldn't break the 215ish mpbs.

So I did the standard stuff:

  • plugged directly into my ATT router and immediately went back to 1gig.
  • Configured my old router and removed the Nighthawk and immediately back to 1gig
  • Rebooted my router
  • Updated the firmware

Blah blah but nothing worked.

Well then I decided to reset my router. Initially this helped and I was confused at to why but then thought, meh who cares.

However, as I reconfigured my router I ran a speedtest. Yeah 969mbps and I could repro that so I thought I was good.

I then went and re-enabled Access Control and set the default, block everything, and then I allowed the few devices I still had connected and hit Apply.

After the reboot I was limited again to under 215 mpbs, so I was like what the heck.

Immediately went back and rebooted the router but same issue (with Access Control still on)

I then went and turned off Access Control hit apply and it reboots. And bingo back to over 900

Turned it back on, and back down to 215 or less.

So as long as I leave access control off I am fine, turn it back on and immediately my bandwith is limited.

Have had this router for years and I assure you this issue didn't exist until recently

I am having the exact same issue with using Firmware Version V1.0.9.26_10.2.31

Has anyone been able to resolve this issue without turning Access Control off?

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: R7000 - Limiting Lan Speeds and I figured out why -- Its the Access Control Feature

This might be true to some extent, but I have fiber internet and from the NOP I am able to get 958Mbps Download to 945Mbps Upload speeds at my PC, but when I go through my Netgear R7000 with Firmware Version V1.0.9.26_10.2.31 I get 412Mbps Download and 115Mbps Upload speed with Access Control on.

I have used Access Control for years and never had this kind of a problem where I loose 50% of my speed. Something is wrong with the firmware.

Case850,

Sorry for the dealy response. I like the extra layer of security the Access list provides and let's me control what devices are allowed on the network.

Kids can give frinds the wifi password and allow an infected devise on my network.

Case850,

WOW. yes as they say their is more than 1 way to skin a cat. I like the feature and will continue to use it. You mainatin your network the way you want.

The kids was a simple "use case".

Thanks for the chatting, but I did not post this question here to justify why I use a feature on my router.

Re: R7000 - Limiting Lan Speeds and I figured out why -- Its the Access Control Feature

As for the performance issue with/without access control is all due to the router I have 10/100/1000 cards, gig switches and Cat5e cable runing my network. Like I said on my original post when I connect directly to the NOP I get almost 1-gig up/down.

Unless Netgear figures out how to improve the performance and push an update I will need to live with it or replace it. I like the product, but if I replace the router I do not think I will be buying another consumer product and move to an opensource product.

Re: R7000 - Limiting Lan Speeds and I figured out why -- Its the Access Control Feature

Some have mentioned reverting back to v1.0.7 FW on there R7000s. Seems to be an issue in recent versions of FW causing slower performances. Something to try.

Thank you for the post. Yes if I must move to a platform with better throughput I will be looking at.

1Gbps Fiber > pfsense (build your own) > R7000(AP mode)
