Assisting neighbor with installation of a new Nighthawk R7000 after previous router died. I can get 2.4 GHz to work fine and the 5 GHz is activated but will not WiFi at 5 GHz even within inches from the antennas/ R7000 unit. Three technical issues come to mind for the reason we cannot get to 5 GHZ to work, but need some answers:
They are on an old DSL (AT&T) that is quite slow (don't know actual speed but the 2.4 is speed tested at 2.4 GHz). Is it possible that the slow DSL is clamping the R7000 to the 2.4 GHz on WiFi ?
Even when the Toshiba laptop is hard wired to the router, the port light is amber, to me indicating that it is not getting full speed advantages of the router. Could this be the reason that I cannot get to 5 GHz when working as WiFi?
The R7000 is working on the factory delivered (not updated yet) software. I doubt it, but could this be affecting the ability to go at 5GHz?
Appreciate any assistance offered as this is really bugging me.

You might consider an add-on USB-connected dual-band wireless adapter. A Web search for keywords like, say: USB wireless 5GHz should find many things for less than $25 (less than a new computer).
What, exactly, does that mean? "will not WiFi" is not a useful problem description. It does not say what you did. It does not say what happened when you did it. As usual, showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

No. I'd guess that you could disconnect the DSL, and get the same wireless results.

Noy a very detailed description of anything.

No. The wired port speed is negotiated between the (network switch within the) router and the other device. The 5GHz radio should be completely independent of that.

An actual firmware version would convey more (some) useful information.

With Netgear router firmware, almost any bug is a possibility, but it's unlikely.
Do you know whether the wireless devices you're testing are capable of operating in the 5GHz band? (Is the 5GHz problem with the router or the clients?)
Are you sure that the wifi clients you are using can use 5GHz? A lot of old stuff can't.

The amber light is an indicator that the LAN port is doing 100 Mbps. It will go green if it sees a 1000 Mbps link. A laptop with 100 Mbps LAN is so old that it probably won't do 5GHz.
On an R7000, white might be more likely than green.
Save yourself some confusion. Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look for Documentation. The User Manual might be helpful.
Thanks to everyone..... It appears that the Toshiba Satellite P845T-54102 cannot do 5 GHz on WiFi so they will be clamped to the 2.4 GHz until they upgrade the laptop. Again, thanks for the assistance.

If you want something that plays nicely with Netgear, and works with the same genie software, I recently got the A6100. Small and plugs into a convenient USB socket. ~£20 in real money.
