R7000 firmware updates not being announced or detected by Nighthawk app or routerlogin.net

I bought an R7000 in 2015 and for many years received regular email updates from Netgear announcing new firmware versions. Also, if I logged in at routerlogin.net or used the Nighthawk app to check for firmware updates, routerlogin or the app would inform me when a new version was available.

The last firmware update announcement email updated I received from Netgear was 26 December 2020, and now when I use routerlogin or the app to check for firmware updates, they tell me that none is available, even though the Netgear website lists several R700 firmware updates since 26 December 2020.

I have manually downloaded and installed 1.0.11.130 (the latest listed on the Netgear site), but it is extremely worrisome that I am no longer receiving email updates of new firmware, and that routerlogin and the app do not know that updates are available. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Put bluntly, no, and as you probably won't get any official explanation from Netgear through this forum, I wouldn't feel worrisome about what you've highlighted. All of us who own this model of router are in the same boat. Whether this is an issue across all of the Netgear router range, I have no idea.

At the end of the day, the R7000 AC1900 is in tech terms, old tech, a relic probably designed and conceived 10 years ago which probably is no longer worthy of any serious support, hence why you don't get any more emails. From personal experience, the firmware updates are questionable in their usefulness or what it is Netgear are supposed to have 'fixed' and of course you'll never know if you're running the latest firmware unless you are bothered to look at the relevant support page.

Question you need to ask yourself is, do you bother to put up with Netgear errr 'support'? or do you invest in a new bit of kit? I know what my own decision is.

@pollo_peligroso

You can find a detailed description of the automatic update mechanism in the Vulnerability overview section at https://iot-lab-fh-ooe.github.io/netgear_update_vulnerability/

If you check the entries in the file https://http.fw.updates1.netgear.com/r7000/ww/fileinfo.txt
it looks like Netgear hasn't updated it recently with newer firmware version.

@GregGreg  To be fair, most router owners who would venture onto a forum would never look at information buried in links in pages they probably won't find anyway, because for many, it's just technobabble gobbledegook. I highly suspect that most router owners who come to forums such as this, don't ever read the router manual and so have little idea about their kit anyway, evidenced by the repeat after repeat after repeat postings on this forum from folks who won't even use the forum search engine or Google for answers, they just want answers there and then without doing any of the research. None of this is in any way aimed at the OP, it's a general observation.

If Netgear (and other tech companies) are going to do firmware updates, then they should be absolutely crystal clear what it is they have changed in ordinary language people can understand and make that information super easy to find.

Re: R7000 firmware updates not being announced or detected by Nighthawk app or routerlogin.net

Thanks for the info, guys. I am no expert when it comes to routers etc., but that article about the vulnerability made clear enough that Netgear has left R7000 users hanging out to dry, and that I should no longer trust the routerlogin.net web interface for anything except uploading manual firmware updates that I have manually retrieved from the Netgear site. Yikes. A very good argument for considering replacing my R7000, even if it is otherwise working fine.
