R7000 vs R7800

Thinking about upgrading to a R7800 would it be worth the upgrade from an R7000. I seem to be having issues with my 5ghz band staggering. Wondered if the upgrade would help. Any greater benefits in this router.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

How many devices you have been using under 5ghz. . If you have say more than 200Mbps connections and say 20+ devices connected and consuming data over internet and intranet. then yes the 7800 might help to ease the load.

As far i see 15-20 devices are easily handled by R7K . but if you go more than that and have say close to 1gig internet then the dual band 5ghz might ease the load .

It is the only best range router to upgrade from R7000.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

Two belong to different generation as far as router goes.   R7000 is a good work horse but it's days are over the hill now. I run Voxel f/w on my R7800, one of best router I ever Had. I had R7000 too. I am speaking for myself.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

I am using under 5 device but with multiple apps at a time. I am wondering if the staggering is coming from my modem (SB6190) It is brand new I did buy the CM600 only to take it back due to a vulnerability I also just went from 200mb service to 400mb service Or just could be the roku or the mlbtv app Reason I suspected the router because it mostly occurs on 5ghz band

The other variable could be that I am also using a Dell Chromebook What I am experiencing is on my Chromebook a staggering effect when I am surfing the web on the 5ghz band and then sometimes buffering at the start of the mlbtv app on the roku premium +

Re: R7000 vs R7800

Its highly unlikely that with 5 devices and one device streaming 4k for 400Mbps cant slow down R7000.

I have did this test

I was doing a 1gbps files transfer ie lan transfer to NAS @ 116MB/s and i am simultaneously download @ 113Mbps ie 100Mb ISP line full throttle beyond 100.

Not even a second these two transfer's were affected.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

How did you configure the 5GHz band? band width? channel selection?  security protocol? signal strength at device end?  If you think doing things too much from 5 users, for testing purpose try 2 or 3 users to prove your suspicion.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

Thank for all replies. On the 5ghz band I was around channel 153 I changed it ti the end channel of 161 I first attempted 36 but the router prompted with higher channel recommendation Using WPA2 Seeing how it goes now

Re: R7000 vs R7800

Yes, I got my new router and it is performing nicely. I am getting speeds around 192mb wirelessly. When the suddenlink tech came out and tested my modem speeds were at 400-450mb with his equiment so I know I am getting what I am paying for. Tech stated I might try using Microsoft edge to get better performance for I was using a Google Chrome on a chromebook. I think the Chromebook is my limiting factor. The R7800 is more stable with excellent range. I passed along the R7000 to my brother who was still using wireless N 2.4ghz. He has better range and said he is not experiencig any issues. He was using an extender to get to his living room and with R7000 he no longer needs that.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

By the way you mentioned the ISP tested 400+ and you can only get 200+ max on wireless device. Its not bad . but you can push 300+ easily if the client is 2x2 ac devices.

How much are you getting wired. Are you able reach full speed.

By the way have you upgraded clients with MU-MIMO or holding for some time. it doesnt cost much 20 bugs each dongle if its lappy.

Smart phone and tablets cant be upgraded. This router can very well handle su-mimo and mu-mimo simultaneously . Thats what it was meant for. So even with 500+Mbps ISP line you will get most out of it.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

I have not upgraded clients to MU-MIMO yet.

Have yet to test it wired to the router since all my devices are wireless.

Re: R7000 vs R7800

yes test that first. The direct modem and via router has to yeild same results. 1% is acceptable down or up.
