R7000P: LAN turns amber when turning off PC

Our R7000P works great - except for one issue:

When shutting down the PC the white LAN 1 turns amber and stays on (amber) even when the computer is turned off.

We reboot the computer and shut it down again and the white LAN 1 turns off (no amber light after the 2nd shut down).

We don't want the router showing an steady amber light (100 Mb/10 Mb) while the PC is switched off.

Any idea what can cause this and how to fix it?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

   Why do you care?

If this normal behavior bothers you enough, then you could get a
cheap gigabit Ethernet switch, and insert it between the router and your
(unspecified) "the PC".

This could be normal operation. Lots of PC leave the Ethernet and USB powered. Think about the remote on that folks do. That comes via Ethernet and if the port were not active it would not see the signal to power the PC up.

Thanks for info.

We care because we're afraid that "the bag guys" still would have the opportunity to get into our (turned off) computer (Lenovo Ideacenter 700-25ISH). Yes, the router is password protected, but just want to be sure there's no chance for the bad guys. Smiley Happy

Thank you.

Re: R7000P: LAN turns amber when turning off PC

Sigrid & Dieter,

Nothing the Netgear or any other Ethernet switch can do.

Note: There is a small processor on the computer network interface, which can keep the Ethernet interface up, so a link will be established as long as it's powered (or it is enabled). It does listen for the "magic packet" which can allow starting the system similar to pressing the power button.

Disable the WoL functionality on your computer (resp. it's network interface(s)), and the computer won't continue keeping an Ethernet link up (for WoL purposes) while it's shutdown.

Grüsse

-Kurt

Re: R7000P: LAN turns amber when turning off PC

Wow, Kurt, that was a great hint !

The "Wake on Magic Packet" was not displayed in the Device Manager (> Network Adapters, right-clicking the resp network card, > Properties, > Advanced). So we had to go through the BIOS Setup.

Ever since the WoL was disabled we're not getting the amber light anymore. We did several tests. That's why our reply to you took a little longer than you probably expected.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Nochmals vielen Dank und auch Grüße zurück.
