R7800: Cannot delete Read-Only files on ReadyShare drive

I have a Nighthawk(R) X4S R7800, Firmware: V1.0.2.28

Connected via USB is a LianLi drive enclosure with 2 x WD Green 2TB drives.

Any read-only files on the drive cannot be deleted. Also, their read-only file status cannot be changed.

To confirm this:

  1. Make two copies of the same file on a local drive. Mark one as read-only.
  2. Copy them to a folder on the readyshare drive
  3. Try deleting both files

>>> The normal file will be deleted, the read-only file will report:

The account can’t be completed because the file is open in another program

Trying to remove Read-Only

  1. Right-click the file and choose properties
  2. Uncheck read-only and click OK
  3. Display the properties again

>>> The file will be marked read-only again

Trying to change permissions:

  1. Right-click the file and choose properties
  2. On security tab, edit the permissions of “Everyone”
  3. Click OK

>>> An error is returned:

Unable to save permission changes on…

Access is denied

My workaround is to connect the enclosure directly to my computer. There it can be deleted after confirmation.

Thanks

Hi nix9000,

Did you set the read only on the drive itself or via the ReadyShare(UI)?

Re: R7800: Cannot delete Read-Only files on ReadyShare drive

I set read-only on the file, before copying it to the readyshare drive.

When i attempted to clear read-only (so it could be deleted) I did it on the readyshare drive itself (via Windows Explorer).

I'm not aware how read-only can be set via the ReadyShare UI. In the router dialog, Readyshare is set to Basic mode, and the configuration options are very limited.

Hi nix9000,

That could be the reason why you cannot delete files via ReadyShare if you set the permission direct on the USB. You can try setting the permission in ReadyShare.

Re: R7800: Cannot delete Read-Only files on ReadyShare drive

Hi

The readyshare section of the GUI only allows you to modify the read/write permission of the folder as a whole. The folder already allows read/write access.

The problem is only with files that are marked as read-only being copied to the device. There is no way to clear the read-only status of a file on the readyshare drive.

Re: R7800: Cannot delete Read-Only files on ReadyShare drive

Hi nix9000,

Yes that is correct. You can set permission per folder.

For the files that has been marked as read-only, the ReadyShare has no control of the permission the drive has set.

Re: R7800: Cannot delete Read-Only files on ReadyShare drive

OK, I believe that to be a basic failure of functionality.

If I connect the drive enclosure to the PC, select the file in Windows Explorer and uncheck "Read-Only", it will clear its read-only status.

If I do the same thing when the enclosure is connected via ReadyShare, it reports "Access is Denied"

Re: R7800: Cannot delete Read-Only files on ReadyShare drive

Hi nix9000,

The ReadyShare creates its own permission but does not handle any permission created on the drive itself.

Wow, so any read-only file copied to the drive, can never, ever be deleted?!?

Hi nix9000,

Yes that is correct. The permission was created on the drive and not via the ReadyShare.
