R7800 Firmware 1.0.2.28
I'ved noticed since updating to the new firmware release v1.0.2.28 that the router admin logs are now messed up, they no longer show DHCP request, time updates of when you log in to the unsecure web interface (please can you make logging in HTTPS!) So one step forward, and loads back, also great to see Netgear still using miniupnpd from 2007! version 20070127 great work... <sigh> Any chance you could update miniunpnpd to the latest version as this old version has vulnerbilities (it is ten years old) also can you fix the logs! Yes the router was reset after the update before I'm asked. Also your web page is still pointing to v1.0.2.20 but the download is v1.0.2.28 so theres that problem too. Below is a list of what they have fixed which is a bit vage when it comes to security and other bugs.
New Features and Enhancements:
- Removed the "Enable Video Network" option on wireless page of the GUI.
Bug Fixes:
- Fixed the issue where the GUI can only accept a maximum of seven keywords to block HTTP sites.
- Fixed the issue where a folder in a USB storage device can't be renamed.
- Fixed security issues.
- Fixed other bugs.

Why are you posting firmware images in .rar format? macOS has no native way to unpack these, Linux may not either.
.zip or .bz would make a lot more sense.

Rif.: R7800 Firmware 1.0.2.28
Hi All,
since the previous version i've noticed the following bugs:
- After a while the router is running it stops to report attached devices speed in every tab, application/device.
- The QoS roules latest update has been July the 7th. It's quite impossible that no new rules came out after 8 months.
- The hosts file of the router MUST be editable. I don't want to use DNS traps to filter the traffic.
Anone else hs faced these bugs before?
Thank you
Ladril

One big bug is that the router is not operating at 1.7Ghz its only running at at 1.4Ghz the IPQ8065 CPU frequency is 1.7Ghz not 1.4Ghz, also miniupnd is 10 years old. So much of the GPL code is out of date its sickening.
Current CPU setting;
echo "1400000" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed echo "1400000" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed
It should be;
echo "1725000" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed echo "1725000" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed
When will Netgear sort this out? Advertisng the CPU as 1.7Ghz but running it at 1.4Ghz is a blantent lie and against trading standards in the UK. plus the other GPL code which has possible vulnerabilities all needs updating. This can be done by third party firmware compilers in an evening literally, why cant Netgear do this? Another thing is the current OpenSSL version is 1.02h but there are vulnerabilities in that, it should now be 1.0.2k <sigh>

Since updating to fw 1.0.2.28 I have an issue with openvpn. Openvpn works but I cannot anymore connect to the router itself which worked perfectly before updating the fw. All other devices on the LAN can be accesed.

Have you tried a hard reset? I would suggest using a third party Firmware. On smallnetbuilder there is a guy called Voxel who is part of OpenWRT and has released a great version of the R7800 firmware. It has the latest updates for all the OpenGPL code he can fix, the right CPU speed set and openvpn works. It takes no special flashing file, just update from his mediafire link off the site, reset and off you go. To go back just reload the Netgear code. The code is published on gitbhub and the forum link to the firmware is below. Many of us are using it as its faster more secure and shows sadly how little care Netgear is putting into there firmware releases. Reading his comments is worth it.

Problem 1: OpenVPN works fine except connecting to the router setup page. It shows error 404 when I try to login the router through openVPN.
Problem 2: some devices can't get DNS info when connected to wifi.
This firmware needs be fixed as soon as possible!

Considering some of the code for this router like miniupnd is 10 years out of date, I wouldnt hold my breath.

I loaded OPENROUTERs Voxel code yesterday on my R7800. Seems to be good there. Same UI. v1.0.2.30SF.

Re: R7800 Firmware 1.0.2.28
I tried loading 1.0.2.28, and discovered that after booting it, the 5Ghz radio had stopped working. I could not connect to the router via the 5Ghz radio, either with 802.11n or 802.11ac. I had to re-flash back to 1.0.2.20 to re-enable the 5Ghz radio. This level of firmward is just too buggy, and not ready for prime time use.

Re: R7800 Firmware 1.0.2.28
Did you perform a factory reset using IE11 or FF browsers and then manually send the FW file, then factory reset once more the set up from scratch?
Voxels 1.0.2.30SF FW was loaded on my 7800 and both radios are working well using the above process.

Re: R7800 Firmware 1.0.2.28
Did you hard reset the router after using Voxels firmware? I'm using 1.0.2.28 and have no issues with the 5Ghz radio. After going back to back to netgears stock firmware a hard reset should be done after using a third party firmware, mines been quite stable on this build apart from the URl blocker and Netgears really old GPL code and old OpenSSL code which is another matter. The same goes for the first time you update to Voxels firmware you do a hard reset , then after you dont have to unless you go back to stock. Also dont use a backup to put the settings back from stock firmware, or vice versa as you have to enter the settings manually. Using a backup from a third party firmware would just really confuse the router if on stock, and as I said the same if it was a backup from stock firmware to voxels.

Re: R7800 Firmware 1.0.2.28
Netgear are using a 10 year old version of miniupnd in there implimentaion of UPNP so its not great for security, UPNP is never great anyway but they need to update a lot of their GPL and OpenSSL some of which is as mentioned 10 years old in current firmware.
