Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

FWIW, I did read the above thread. You'll have to forgive me for not downloading & installing someone else's custom firmware from an unfamiliar forum metioned in an unvetted post when searching for a solution in an OEM community.

This thread mentioned Netgear is aware of the problem & working on a solution. Downgrading is a just a stop-gap until a fix is released.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

Smallnetbuilder is a very well known forum, Voxels firmware is based on Netgears, its a fork of Netgears stock and is being used on many R7800's for quite a few years now. Voxels sourcecode is published on Github for all to see too, it replaces packages that Netgear never update like OpenSSL for instance. Netgears firmware uses OpenSSL version 1.0.2h on this router in all current firmware versions since 1.0.2.12 which was released in Nov 2016, OpenSSL 1.0.2h was released mid September 2016 this has never been updated since by Netgear for the R7800. Voxel's firmware keeps the router up to date and safer by making sure that OpenSSL is up to date for instance, so you get the latest versions of all the code he can replace, this makes the R7800 operate more efficiently than stock firmware and with greater security too.

If you check the smallnetbuilder community out, you will even see it also has a Netgear representative who monitors it from time to time too. So maybe go have a look.Voxels firmware is a big improvement over Netgears tired and out of date stock and considering they are still using a version of miniupnd which has been patched but is still 10 years out of date! All of this should give you a clue as to how badly Netgear look after thier firmware.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

I also had issues with a pihole not working as a dns server with firmware V1.0.2.62. I tried basically everything while troubleshooting until I found this thread. I flashed Voxel's firmware V1.0.2.63SF and can confirm that it does not have this dns bug.

Hello everyone, so I see that there are a lot of problems in this router and I was going to buy it so what advice could you give me or I have to change the brand?

@youp

most people don't have issues, including myself. Only a select few with a specific config and/or devices are having issues. You can always return the device after you bought it if it doesn't work out for you

If anyone is counting votes, like @microchip8 I have had no problems with the R7800 running standard firmware.

Mine sites behind a DM200 DSL modem and is connected to a messy network on a 16-port unmanaged switch with an Orbi router in AP mode and a Powerline Ethernet network. I also have various Arlo base stations and bridges for cameras and lights.

Yup. Since day one.

Remember people turn up here because they have issues. For every user who has had problems, there may be 1000 out there with troublefree devices.

I noticed this problem when i was looking on amazon not here, and frankly I really liked the x4s because it is the best in it's category even compared to the new models. Frankly Netgear makes exceptional models and must work better softwares.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

I saw a similar issue with the newest update.  I have Pi-Hole server on my LAN.  After upgraded the router firmware, the pi-hole server stopped answering DNS requests.  I downgraded back to .60 and everything returned to normal.

On a side note would be nice if they'd enable the LAN DHCP to support customizable DNS server settings.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

I spent several hours working with openDNS (netgear.opendns.com) after the firmware update to .62. After flashing and reseting the router to factory and doing the full DNS setup for Parental Controls several times, the only way I could get Parental Controls to work is to roll back to .60  and reset the router to factory and setup everything again for Parental Controls and it worked perfectly.

Is that also related to the pi hole thing in most of the earlier messages? Or is this a new one that needs flagging up with the techies?

I haven't seen reports of a plain vanilla installation with this firmware breaking parental controls.

A quick check here shows no problems with that firmware.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but I too (and some other threads) have discussed issues with OpenDNS and V1.0.2.62. This firmware seems to only work with "Minimal" setting for OpenDNS. Very frustrating.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

That is a point however the majority of people likely don't even update to the latest firmware, in fact i would bet the majority.  Had  I not on purpose been paying attention I would have never updated the firmware to this router because when purchased it was working beautiful for a few months.

It was only when I updated from the firmware .52 to .60 and then .62 (never saw .58) that it destroyed the product.  I am using basic setting, I just use the radio wifi through my FIOS gateway.  That simple.  Nothing more. I have reverted back to the oem .52 firmware but its still mucked up.

To deny these firmware updates are trash and poorly tested in beta is bunk.

@mph101_33705 you need to do factory resets when swapping between different firmwares, especially when downgrading

This is why new models, and the new firmware for the R7800, implement an autoupdate feature.

As shipped, autopupdate is turned on. When you install a new router, at the same time as it sets up password recovery, it should ask you if you want to leave Router Auto Firmware Update turned on.

In the browser graphical user interface for the R7800, this setting is here in the GUI:

  • Advanced
  • Administration
  • Firmware Update
  • Router Auto Firmware Update

That is the same place where you manage manual updates.

Of course, by allowing autoupdates you run the risk that it will break your router. (See the theme of this discussion.) That's why many experienced users disable Router Auto Firmware Update. But people who do that are probably experienced users who know to keep a look out for updates.

But my guess is that the majority of people will leave that enabled when they install their routers. So I would question that first statement that "the majority" will not update their firmware. They don't have to. It happens for them even though they won't know it.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

Hello all,

I have just bought this router for a more reliable Sky ADSL connection.  I am in no way a novice but i was up half of the night wondering why the parental controls on this router, simply do not work for me.

I have a Draytek Vigor 120 modem PPPoA-PPPoE bridge.  Open DNS configured correctly, DNS servers set correctly, but i still cannot seem to filter traffic.  I have also got the problem mentioned above, if QoS is active, I am stuck in a login loop when on the attached devices page.

I am using 1.0.2.62 but am considering downgrade to 60.  I have a Pi hole built and ready to use on my network, but I am not even attempting this yet.  Any help greatly appreciated, and sorry if this is slightly off topic.

Thanks

Parental controls work fine here on the latest firmware.

Have you tried managing it through the desktop genie app? It is one of the few areas where this is easier than the browser's graphical user interface.

Enable it there, then go into the GUI.

How do you confirm that? And how are you trying to filter traffic?

Where does it go wrong?

When throwing a question like this into a long running discussion, ti is usually better to start a new post. That is more likely to get attention, especially given the subject of this one. New messages ate also more likely to grab the eyeballs of the Netgear people who have too much new stuff to handle than to get into the nitty gritty of a discussion that now covers life, the universe and everything. (As yet, no one has raised Brexit, but it might not be too long.)

Thanks for the reply.  I have tried through browser, desktop app Win 10 and genie on Android.  Still always the same.

I have just downgraded to 60 and every issue that I posted is now working??

Internet tab shows correct DNS servers.  Ran DNS leak test.  Initially set filter "global" to moderate.  Have since tried high.  Then played with filter setting per device as well as router default.

Where does it go wrong?

I can access any site including well known porn sites.

Thanks and noted.

Haha, please no more brexit talk.

I will stick with 60 for now, unless I can find out where I went wrong.  Another issue I did have was remote genie access, which now also works

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

The mobile apps are rubbish for configuring things. The Netgear genie is a bit better than the Nighthawk version, but still not great.

Surprising that the desktop app gets you nowhere.

Does this work OK?

https://netgear.opendns.com/sign_in.php

I've done nothing with firewalls. Wouldn't know where to start. Parental Controls just work.  But i have implemented minimal settings. No kids to control, thank heaven.

Does this mean that you have the settings done in parental controls but it achieves nothing?

Remote access also works fine here with latest firmware. But so does everything else. I don't have a Pi, which is really the theme in most of this discussion. Maybe I should get Eben Upton FREng on the case.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

Parental controls via OpenDNS broke with .62 for me (no matter the setting, setting only blocks phishing sites), but I'm not sure it's fully related to the firmeware. There possibly is also an authentication issue on Cisco/OpenDNS side of the house for how accounts/routers are linked that may be causing this issue. As some suggesed, I downgraded to .52 which fixed some of the WiFi connectivity issues but parental controls still didn't work as expected.

I eventually fixed this by deleting my OpenDNS account and starting a new one. My theory is that some type of conflict has developed recently with the OpenDNS account I established at opendns.com before I even owned a Netgear router and the same account used under netgear.opendns.com. After I deleted my opendns.com account it also deleted my netgear.opendns.com account. I then established a new account under a different email address and everything works under .52. I plan to stick with .52 until a new firmware update is released. due to the connectivity issues I've seen with firmware after .52.

Same problem with pihole, upgraded to firmware v1.0.2.62 pihole went nuts, had a spare PI so made another clean one from scratch tried again resulting with the same problem others have mentiond. Rolled back to v1.0.2.60 and both piholes work fine.

Re: R7800 Latest Firmware Issue - DO NOT UPDATE TO V1.0.2.62

Any update?

I have the same problem when I set custom DNS and they point to an internal DNS (eg. router: 10.0.0.1, custom dns server: 10.0.0.254).

I don't want to downgrade because I was experiencing traffic spikes and packet loss issues in previous versions and now everything is fine except for this.

Are you sure about that?

The main conclusion lf this discussion is that Netgear has done something to screw up PiHole. If you are using PiHole, then these messages go into details. Sadly, there seems to have been no visible progress at Netgear's end. However, @Kamoj reports that alternative firmware does not suffer from this affliction.

If you are not using PiHole it may be something else. In which case, you might do well to start a new discussion. In that way there is a better chance that Netgear's minders will pick up your message.
