R7800 Smart Connect

Nighthawk X6 and X4S show both routers have Smart Connect technology when comparing spec between X6 and X4S.  The Nighthawk X6 Smart Connect enable/disable function in the Wireless Settings section.  Where do I enable Smart Connect for Nighthawk X4S R7800 Router?  Is X4S R7800 router support Smart Connect feature?

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

The R7800 at this time does not have "Smart Connect" (band steering). It might be added in future firmware updates is what I have heard from Netgear. Other routers in its class from competitors (ie- Linksys EA8500) all shipped with band steering out of the box. Not the R7800 from Netgear.

As for “Smart Connect” on the R8000; it only works between the two 5GHz radios that unit has. It does not work with the 2.4GHz radio to and from the 5GHz radios. Also, how Netgear implemented Broadcom’s steering drivers/software in the Netgear firmware does cause issues with dual band devices trying to connect on the 5GHz radios. Some folks just end up having to disable the “Smart Connect” feature on the R8000 all together. I worked with the R8000 product engineers on this issue with a number of devices on this issue starting about 2 years ago. The engineers gave up after 6 months and did not fix the issues. Most of the devices that had the issues were those that are 5GHz 802.11n devices (ie- Nexus 7 2013 tablet).

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

Any update as to when SmartConnect might be available for the R7800?  I recently upgraded my R7000, which I use as an access point, to SmartConnect and love that feature.  It's a shame that my R7800, which I use as my main router and AP and which is a much newer model, does not yet support SmartConnect.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

Hello any news yet about the smart connect function for the R7800? I replaced my R7000 with the R7800. But the internet connection was better with the R7000 on smart connect on the second floor, than with the R7800 now. Before i discovered the smart connection the internet connection was very slow on the second floor, but afterwards with smart connection enabled the internet connection was just great!! So hope smart connect will be available soon for the R7800.

Hi All,

No confirmation yet for the Smart connect feature on R7800 will be added in FW release but we will provide an update if this has been added.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

It's disappointing that the R7000, which is a much older router, has had Smart Connect for quite some time now whereas the R7800, which is a much newer router, still does not have it.  Are there some technical difficulties with the R7800?

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

I just discovered that the r7800 does not have the "Smart Connect intelligently" function that the older r7000 has.

Any idea when this function come available?

Regardless, smart connection feature often creates problem. Manually select channel after surveying your neighborhood wireless

congestion using wireless analyzer such as inSSIDer or Acrylic.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

When I enable Smart Connect I dropped from 125mb to 50mb download speeds.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

5Ghz is much faster but has lower range and the opposite is true for the 2.4 Ghz band. I usually use 5Ghz band on my laptops for LAN transfer speeds which are more than 2x that of the 2.4Ghz band. In such scenario Smart Connect may actually be detrimental and I've found some occasional WiFi issues with things like WiFi calling and other latency sensitive applications with Smart Connect.

  • Pretty much every computer/mobile device will automatically switch between multiple available connections regardless of smarconnect if necessary.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

FWIW, I gave up on Netgear adding SmartConnect to the R7800 and have switched to a Ubiquiti router and access point and haven't been happier.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

I had been using v.12 FW version of NG code. Bandsteering is enabled on my 7800, however HT160 and MU-MIMO is disabled on my router. WPA2 and AES and using manual channels. I've since graduated to Voxels v.30SF OpenRouter FW which is NGs open source FW. 7800 still working well.

Not working for you?

What FW version do you have loaded?

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

Hi,

The latest,  V1.0.2.32.  There still is no "Smart Connect" or Band Steering as apart of the firmare.

The previous comments from @JamesGL confirm it's not apart of the software (as it's absent as well from the router), and there has been no update on the feature being added.

Re: R7800 Smart Connect

Maybe something that won't be added. MIght depend on what chip set is being used. I thought that smart connect or band steering is a broadcom thing.
