R7800 wont connect to internet via Tp link TD-W9970

Hi All

Ive tried to re-visit getting my R7800 i used to use with a virgin connection to work, but im stumped, hopefully someone much more advanced in networking than me can help!

i have a sky Er115 router that i want to replace. i understand that the R7800 doesnt have a built in modem, so i have purchased a TP link TD-W9970 after trailing the net for suggestions (it seems people smarter than me have managed to get this to work!)

i have managed to configure this to work and connect to the Internet, thus replacing skys ER115. then i changed it into bridge mode and tried to connect through my R7800, alas here i cant get it to work. it detects an Internet connection, and then asks for a user name and password. god only knows what that is, ive searched for hours for a solution with no luck.

furthermore i cant seem to get the R7800's firmware to update despite following instructions to the letter.

any help with this is greatly appreciated

_How_, exactly?  Does your DSL connection use PPPoA or PPPoE?  Any
other exotic options?

> [...] i changed it into bridge mode [...]

   _How_, exactly?

> [...] and tried to connect through my R7800, [...]

You connected what to what, exactly?  And configured the R7800 how,
exactly?

> [...] it detects an Internet connection, [...]

"it"?  Which "it"?  What, exactly, does that mean to you?  What is
the actual evidence that "it" (whatever that is) "detects" anything?
Some LED or other?  Something on the R7800 management web site?  Other?

This is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what you
did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual, showing
actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

> [...] then asks for a user name and password. [...]

_What_ "asks"?  See "not a useful problem description [...]", above.

"can[']t" is not a useful problem description.  See above.  "update"
from which version, to which version?  _Which_ "instructions"?  Have you
already fetched a copy of the R7800 User Manual?

i followed the "setting it up" section of this page, that did get it to connect to the internet via the Sky(MER)_VDSL   isp option, im not really sure of the differences between the two you mention, or others to be honest, just a lot of things ive read online say sky uses that connection type. and as i said that did get it to connect to the internet without the need for skys router.

https://kevq.uk/how-to-use-a-tp-link-router-with-sky-fibre-optic/

> [...] i changed it into bridge mode [...]

i followed these instructions for that, the only thing i altered from the above original setup was the "connection type" drop down i changed to "bridge"

https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1332/

> [...] and tried to connect through my R7800, [...]

so microfilter from the wall to the Tp link then an ethernet cable from the LAN/WAN port of that to the "iternet" port of the R7800

i didnt do anything to configure it, i dont know how,  just let the router auto configure from the routerlogin.net page.....

> [...] it detects an Internet connection, [...]

So once the auto configure finished the R7800 said (the routerlogin.net page) that it found an internet conection and asks for a ISP username and password, i have used the same one entered on the TP links configuration, plus many others a few google searches come up with but all say "ISP user name or password incorrect."

> [...] then asks for a user name and password. [...]

 as above

> furthermore i cant seem to get the R7800's firmware to update despite

so i dowloaded this ZIP file

https://kb.netgear.com/000061548/R7800-Firmware-Version-1-0-2-68

and followed these instructions (ive also tried this .img file also)

https://kb.netgear.com/000060527/R7800-Firmware-Version-1-0-2-62

the current firmware version is V1.0.2.20

when i try to update the firmware it just says "img file not valid"

let me know if you require anymore info

Re: R7800 wont connect to internet via Tp link TD-W9970

Should be:

WAN-->TP-Link(Bridge Mode)-->(WAN PORT R7800)-->LAN

Have you called the ISP Support and discussed with them what you are trying to do and that you need the correct settings and / or credentials to connect you equipment?

Why would you be searching google for ISP / SKY credentials?

im not sure what you mean by the first "WAN" there?

not yet, i was under the impresion that sky arent exactly forthcoming with ditching their router, maybe they have changed this?

Why would you be searching google for ISP / SKY credentials?

as above, many searches all seem to say the same thing and to use something like wireshark to sniff the credentials, ive tried that with no avail also
