R7900 DNS Problems

Hi all,

I've had my Nighthawk X6 R7900 for less than 2 months now without any problems until about a week ago.  My devices started having problems using the router's built in DNS feature. Names would not resolve and I'd get connection time outs.  I thought this might've been an issue with Comcast's DNS services so I changed the router to use Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 addresses for resolution.  That didn't help.  Eventually I've started to manually configure each device (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) to override the DHCP provided DNS server (e.g. the router) with the Google DNS settings. That worked and they're behaving ok once again. Some devices, like a Chromebook we have, seem to be working ok still using the router as the DNS server.

I'm running firmware version: V1.0.1.26_10.0.23

Any ideas what could be going on?

Thanks for any help you can offer,

--David

Re: R7900 DNS Problems

As a follow up, I did a bit of testing and it seems like the DNS service on the router is dying / becoming unresponsive.

Here's a test I did while not able to resolve names from any device using the R7900 as my DNS server:

mycomputer$ dig @192.168.1.1 www.yahoo.com

; <<>> DiG 9.9.7-P3 <<>> @192.168.1.1 www.yahoo.com

; (1 server found)

;; global options: +cmd

;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

I then rebooted the R7900 using the web GUI and after coming back up, the DNS service is working again:

mycomputer$ dig @192.168.1.1 www.yahoo.com

; <<>> DiG 9.9.7-P3 <<>> @192.168.1.1 www.yahoo.com

; (1 server found)

;; global options: +cmd

;; Got answer:

Has anyone seen a R7900's DNS become unresponsive after some time?  I've seen various DNS issues, including somewhat similar problems with other models.

Re: R7900 DNS Problems

I'm having this same issue as well, it's very strange as I can RDP into machines that are on the wired LAN but cannot access any external websites unless I change my DNS server to google.  Happens almost exactly 48 hours from when I initally plugged the router in for the first time.  I was running the latest firmware V1.0.2.10_10.0.29 when it happened.

Re: R7900 DNS Problems

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem? Built in router by chance?

Possible that the detected DNS services from your ISP could have been down or not working. If you changed to Google DNS and it now works, maybe an ISP DNS issue.
