Sadly true.

In this case a couple of external events arrived at the same time that Netgear was debugging the R7000P.

The first was the KRACK scare about insecure wifi connections, although it would not affect an R7000P in router mode.

The second was the Chromecast/Android "wifi flood" episode, which hit most router makers. One consequence of that one, which Google gave us and which the chipset foundries had to fix, was to kill 2.4GHz wifi.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Hi Terry,

My techie talent is not that extensive.   My main concerns had to do with whole house Intermet coverage (2.4/5G) and eithernet connections.  According to their dashboard, I have 18 devices on the router and all has been good for over one month.

Sorry that I couldn't do more testing, but my router needs are probably that of the typical user.

since then I no longer have any issue. I understand this workaround might not be the best solution for everyone,

but since I really like this router (besides that internet issue), I guess it's short term solution until (hopefully) netgear engineers come up with a real firmware fix.

This is one of the better ideas I've seen on this thread, far superior than to do a complete factory setting reset - which would be like taking your car in for a small recall/service bulletin and getting it home and having to yank the batter, replace all the oil, reset all radio presets, etc. Upgrading/Downgrading the firmware should not require a complete reset of factory settings - it's Netgear's responsibilities in their already required router restart to cover the basis after changing firmware versions.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Hi Bob.

Thanks for your info. That is good to know your system is working well. I guess that is the main concerns of users who really want to

have a stable internet connectiion to their wired and wireless devices.

I am also running beta test for R8000. Initial result was good with regular settings, but with stress test. it fails after few hours. So presently I am on beta FW, with connecting devices stable without any hickups, but with regular setting, as most households need, anyway.

I am asking Netgear not to release this FW for R8000. Hopefully they don't until further fix/and test.

Best,

Terry

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Hi Terry,

I was led to believe that the 7900P is  just a stripped down version of mthe 8000 (only 1 USB port/etc).  Wonder if it runs the same FW?  Version that I am running has 2.2 for the last two digits.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Hi Bob.
No, it is not the same beta FW.
It has to do with apps implication in the hardware, that resolve into router crashing, acting irregularly...

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Netgear did have me try a beta version of the R8000 firmware in my R7900P.  Here is the communication:

Hello, Greg, I apologize for the inconvenience. The Engineers are still testing and comparing the logs. This is a beta firmware that they want to test and compare another set of logs. We appreciate your continued patience. I assure you our engineers our doing there best since this case is on there priority list. Please have customer try FW R8000P_V1.3.0.11_1.2.2test.chk and get debug logs with same procedure if necessary. Engineering need to compare logs from the 2 FW. Thank you for choosing NETGEAR. Have a great day! Regards, Bernard Expert ID: 8333 NETGEAR L2 Support Expert

@Greg0130@tvbob@michaelkenward

Hi all

<<Please have customer try FW R8000P_V1.3.0.11_1.2.2test.chk>>

FW R8000P_V1.3.0.11_1.2.2test.chk is not the test beta FW for R8000 that is presently being tested. It is for R8000P model with added MIMO and not with Cirle.

I do not have neither R7900P nor R8000P to do cross-test with R8000 FW. I am sorry myself for this inconvenience.

BTW, how is the testing of FW R8000P on R7900P, could I ask?

Terry

Netgear asked you to try firmware for the R8000P, not the R8000, in the R7900P.

The R8000P and the R8000 are different animals.

I have seen various explanations of how P versions differ from their predecessors, including that they have different chipsets, but they all agree that they are not the same.

Release firmware for one will not work on the other.

I did a factory reset. It worked for 2 days (better than 6 hours) but then needed a reset. Great idea on the outlet, I have smart things and may try that! Though in my quest for better routing and WiFi I’ve decided to now to ubiquity

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

G-Easy had asked about ISPs and modems.

My ISP is Spectrum Business  (Silicone Valley South) supplying multiple IPs. The Modem is a SMC D3G 1604w-033-NA in bridged mode. I have had this modem for at least 12 mo.

Just wanted to add my experience here.  I bought a 7900P from Costco less than 2 years ago.  I stayed up to date with the firmware and it worked for a good while but when I switched ISPs to Spectrum, I noticed that the performance on the router was getting worse and I was not receiving the speeds I was paying through Spectrum.  Then one of the LAN ports on the router would only connect at 10MBps. I rebooted the router during troubleshooting and got the solid amber light on the power which means the router was practically dead.  Since Costco is so awesome, I was able to exchange for a new 7900P.  Within 2 days of hooking it up, I noticed the performance stability issues you all are mentioning.  Before you know it, i was rebooting every 2 days or so and then googling the issue and came across this thread.  And then I got the amber light of  death again and couldn't boot up the router anymore.  Frustrated, I returned the 7900P 2 weeks later and settled with an Asus AC3100 from Best Buy which has been working very well since 3/22/18.

I really wanted to like the 7900P but as consumers, we obviously shouldn't have to settle with these issues out the box.  I really wanted to try an X10 but read that some users were still having the reboot/performance issues.  I don't know what the issue is but I think it's important that everyone posting at least provide your current ISP and what model modem you are using.  As I mentioned, I am currently with Spectrum and I am using their modem which is an Arris TM1602.  I noticed my internet speeds would gradually get slower until 2 days later I was getting less then 1Mbps up/down and had to reboot.  Like I said, I don't know what Netgear's issue is but I have a feeling it has to do with either the ISP or compatibility with the modem talking to the router.  Before I had Spectrum, I had a different local ISP that was Fiber-to-the-home (so I didn't need a modem) and I was running on the 7900P for almost 2 years without issue.

And lastly, obviously not everyone with the 7900P is having the issue, but I think there's a lot of users like us out there with these problems, so much so that Netgear should at least address or acknowledge the problem.  Either way, after this experience I might as well just stick with the Asus router.  I will continue to follow this issue though until there is a definitive resolution.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Thanks for following up.  So thats at least 3 of us on Spectrum.  Maybe the issue has something to do with that.

So far I've had my Asus AC3100 for a couple of weeks and have had no issues.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

I don't think it is a problem with Spectrum in my situation. The Router worked perfectly until I upgraded the firmware from V1.1.4.6_1.1.85 with Smart Connect disabled. I had not been aware of the advantage of Smart Connect (single name). I went back to V1.1.4.6_1.1.85 after upgrading to later versions and had the "Two Day Drop" issue. After going back to .85 I enabled Smart Connect and had no issues. My concern then was security vulnerabilities.

I am on spectrum as well and have fibre through them. Do not know of it is related to that. The router used to work fine when I was with charter on a standard cable connection

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Just a quick additiuon to this speed discussion..

I have been in the 'battle' with the 48 hour Internet drop since the first week in December.  First thought was the cable modem.  Replaced the Arris with a Linksys.  Same dropout issue.

After prolonged discussions, I found myself involved with Netgear as a volunteer firmware tester.  Long story short; the current test version of the firmware has been rock solid for over one month.  I am on Spectrum and paying for 200mps service.  My test this morning was a down speed of 236mps and an up speed of 22.  There is hope.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

I gave up on it. After reading so many horrible reviews from people who had the same problem I knew it wasn't my ISP & I was correct. I bought a Netgear 7800 & it has been working flawlessly since the 9th.

It's simply terrible.

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

For me, there was a simple solution.... i returned the Nighthawk and bought a LinkSys Router.   Its been running solid for over 4 days now.

I have lost complete faith in NetGear after this debacle.   IMHO is completely unacceptable to have this big of a problem go for this long.

It has been known for almost a year that a reboot resolves the issue.  It should have taken NetGear 1 day to code, test and release a firmware with an option under advanced admin to "reboot automatically at xxx time" every day so you could set it to automatically reboot at say, 3 am.   If they did that one simple thing, i would have implemented that and stayed with NetGear.

What I don't understand is the need to reboot at all. I've had the 7800 since the 9th & it has not needed to reboot at all

Re: R7900P dropping internet requiring reset every few days

Hi Nedra,

To save you time, call the Netgear support number and ask them to link you to the test firmware for the router.  If the Level 1 person has no idea what you are asking for, ask them to transfer you to the Level 2 tech support.  They know all about it and will likely provide the firmware.  Here is the version:   V1.3.0.11_1.2.2(test).

A few of us here have been testing it with great success (no Internet failures). for more than a month.  Still awaiting the release version.

Good luck.  Keep us posted..

Bob

Hi Bob, I'm not interested. I returned that to Costco & very happy with the decision. I will have to figure out how to stop receiving these posts since it's no longer relevant.
