[R7960P] Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings...

Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings. I've tried manually and wirelessly. Each time, I get to the very end of the status bar before being asked to sign back in to routerlogin.net. Same thing happens when I try to make changes to my settings (e.g. disable Dynamic QoS).

Looking at the logs, I see a lot of Fraggle Attacks.... I wonder if they may be the culprit? The IP appears to be owned by Comcast who is my internet provider.

Re: [R7960P] Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings...

1. What firmware are you on?

2. How are you attempting to update firmware? over wireless, wired connection, via the app, via the browser? We need details to help

3. have you tried a different pc/laptop? or a different browser?

4. I'd highly recommend updating via a hardwired connection and using the browser method.

5. if you're manually updating, did you extract the file? many just open it but it needs to be extracted to be updated.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. Here are my comments:

1) V1.4.1.44_135
2) Manual on Chrome and Internet Explorer through routerlogin.net (both wireless and direct connect to router). Automatic on routerlogic.net and Nighthawk iOS app.
3) Different browser and device (iPhone), but not a different pc/laptop.
4) Yes
5) Yes

Re: [R7960P] Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings...

here's what I'd try.

1. download the newer firmware. and fully extract it to your device. I'd also try a pc if you don't have one.

2. unhook the router from the modem. Factory reset the router.

3. Try to upgrade the firmware during the new install setup. you won't be able to setup internet during setup but everything else you should be able to.

See if you can update this route.

Re: [R7960P] Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings...

My windows laptop only has one Ethernet port. If this port is used to connected to the Router, how do I access the new setup through routerlogin.net when the Modem is not connected to?

EDIT: Scratch that, I was able to connect without the Modem. Testing your suggest route now.

I was able to upload the new firmware, but the firmware version listed under router info still says the old version. May try logging in later to see if it’s updated.

Hello Gohawks

This is a known issue and our engineers are working to fix it.

Thanks, Darren.

Is there an ETA for a fix? Trying to make changes to my router settings in addition to updating the firmware. It’s been acting this way for weeks now. Whenever I make a change I just get kicked out, sign back in, and the change was not saved.

For the settings thing have you tried another web browser or use the phone app to make those changes and see if the same thing is happening?

Hi DarrenM,

Yes, I’ve tried Chrome and IE on PC, as well as the Safari iOS app on an iPhone 11. The Nighthawk app doesn’t have the setting I want to change.

Can you tell me what settings you are trying to change so we can try and replicate the issue.

Re: [R7960P] Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings...

I was attempting to enable Dynamic QoS and change device priorities. After attempting again before commenting here it worked... not sure what changed but that's good. Thank you.

Re: [R7960P] Unable to update firmware or make changes to settings...

I am still unable to update firmware on a Nighthawk R7960P router. Still on V1.4.1.44_1.3.5. I have tried both firmwares V1.4.1.56_1.3.14.chk and V1.4.1.56_1.3.10.chk.   Tried manually uploading both files and after reboot the old firmware remains V11.4.1.44_1.3.5.   The logs offer no help. Did you find a solution to this problem, since it is a know problem to Netgear?
