R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

Hello All,

The issue I am facing with the router is that the speed my ISP is providing is the not the same I am receiving from the router.

I tested the speed test between my ISP modem and Nighthawk router and that is above 300Mbps.

When I connect my Laptop to my modem using ethernet cable the speed is above 300Mbps.

Then when I connect my computer to Nighthawk Router using Ethernet port or WiFi  my speed drops to 140Mbps.

Then I Reset my Nighthawk router and then connected my computer using Ethernet the speed was 169Mbps. At this time there is only one device connected to the Router.

I did ran the speed test in Nighthawk App between my modem and router and the speed shows above 300Mbps.

I am hoping if someone can help me understand what the issue is.

Thanks.

I am having the same issue and believe it is a netgear firmware issue from what i see on the internet. I have downloaded the last 4 versions of the firmware and going to experiment with them.

What firmware version do you have on the device?

A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.

It might also help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router, if there is one. The model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

Thanks for the reply.

Firmware version is V1.0.4.58_10.1.72.

The modem I have is Arris SURFboard SB8200. This is not a router.

Please let me know if you need any more info regarding my setup.

Thanks.

That's good to know.

In all the playing around, it is important to do things in the correct order.

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug modem.
  • Turn off router and computers.
  • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it connect.
  • Turn on computers and rest of network.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

Thanks Michael for the reply.

I followed the steps provided by you and I still don't see any change in the speed.

Also, I have this process setup on schedule twice a week for past few years now. Only difference is the Wifi devices connect to the network as soon as its available.

Thanks.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

You said earlier that you got maximum wifi speeds of 140Mbps. That may be down to your wifi clients. There is nothing that the router can do about that.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

I can understand if it is wifi alone. But I tried using Ethernet cable as well. Both are under 169Mbps.

If the speed from my Modem is 300Mbps entering into the Router, I expect at least 250-290 Mbps from the router to the computer using ethernet wire.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

I have now been running for 24 hours with no problem. I downloaded version 1.0.4.28 version of the software and it immediately fixed my problem. The following are some stats. On latest version of software i was seeing 260 meg with a 1 gig service from fibre provider, measured on the LAN side of router. Laptop plugged in in place of router showed 500 meg.

With version 1.0.4.28 version of software i get 500 meg on LAN side of router. I have no doubt that the latest software broke the router. Its almost as if the Router is set to QoS enabled even though not selected.

There are a couple of versions between 1.0.4.28 and the latest version. Tomorrow i will try some of these to establish which is the newest unbroken version.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Neboiss for providing the valuable info. Please do let me know if you find the firmware that is good. Also, why are you getting only half the the speed of your ISP?

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

So far i have tested 10.0.4.28 and 10.0.4.46 and neither version have the problem. Next version to test is 10.0.4.52.

With regard to my line speed of 500 meg on a 1 gig facility, this is where my problem started. Since i was only seeing 260 meg originally i complained to my ISP they sent someone out to my home and tested 500 meg at the socket. They ack they have a problem and working on it. However, they also pointed out the problem with my router. They were able to put their own router on the line and get the full 500 meg.

This is when i started investigating the problem and identified the firmware issue. In other words there are 2 problems and both being worked.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

Thanks for the info. So, seems like the router firmware is the issue. I will start downgrading my firmware as well and see if the issue gets resolved. Do you have a link to the older firmwares?

Please keep me posted on how other firmware tests go.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

The older versions of the firmware are here.

www.netgear.com/support/product/r8000.aspx#download

select firmware and software downloads and then select older versions on the right.

The file is a zipped file you have to unzip and use the .chk file

My ISP issue is now resolve see speed test attached.

is 10.0.4.46 not as good as .28? Which one are you running on?

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

I am running .46 with no problems. I was on .28 for longer and hence felt better about recommending it.

It is amazing to be getting near giga bit speed again.
Hopefully, netgear will fix the problem with latest firmware I am seeing lots of the same complaints on the internet.

Re: R8000 - Internet Speed from the Router is very low than what the ISP is providing

I am hitting this issue now. I thought it was resolved. I am on Firmware 1.0.4.68. The last posted version that appears to have worked was 46? Do I need to downgrade? Not sure how to downgrade. Can you provide any place where I can get guidance on that? Thanks

Two obvious places to start.

The manual: visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

That page will also have any software, firmware and drivers for your device, if they exist.

Look for the model number on the label on the device.

Check the section in the manual on updating the firmware.

Then there is this:

How do I manually upgrade firmware to my NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
