Re: R8000, VPN and dropping of MD5 signed certificates

Hi all,

There's still a slight delay in R8000 to next week due to some P1 bug that was found during testing. So far following hot-fixes have been released:

R6260/R6350/R6850/R7000/R7000P/R6900P/R8000P/R7900P

The way to get them is by downloading the firmware from https://www.netgear.com/support/product/r7000p#hotfix replacing r7000P with specific model number. So for R7000, it's https://www.netgear.com/support/product/r7000#hotfix.

The rest will be released before end of May.

Re: R8000, VPN and dropping of MD5 signed certificates

Hi @AbhayB,

I was reading through the hotfix notes for one of the other routers and didn't see any details about the actual fix.

Would you be able to let me know what algorithm is being used instead of MD5?

And are there any plans to expand the functionality of Netgear's OpenVPN configuration UI to allow for more control?

Thanks!

Re: R8000, VPN and dropping of MD5 signed certificates

It's SHA256 from MD5. The UI will have a way to update the certificate if existing.

Re: R8000, VPN and dropping of MD5 signed certificates

Today we also released firmware for R9000. This is a full ECO.

https://kb.netgear.com/000058270/R9000-Firmware-Version-1-0-4-2

You can use Nighthawk app to update to this version

and also turn auto-firmware update on for receiving future updates automatically.

This firmware also increased Traffic Meter limit to 4095TB!

Re: R8000, VPN and dropping of MD5 signed certificates

Just a question. I read in this threat taht for the R7000 the version 30 firmware Beta was released.

When i logon to my router and do a check to see if there is an update it tells me that there is no update. I can download and install the beta firmware but i don't like beta software on production machines.

Will there be an official update that can be found via the updater (or the genie app) before the openVPN stops working?

Re: R8000, VPN and dropping of MD5 signed certificates

Hi,

The hotfix releases will be released as official releases soon but do note that they are not 'beta' releases. They have gone through expedited QA process internally before release just not extended testing that's required before we make it official.

Best way to update to the latest firmware is to use the Nighthawk app or router UI.

Updated my R8000 to this new firmware, but now the OpenVPN service no longer works. Created another thread to discuss.
