R8000P and Mesh

I have an R8000P AC4000 router that I'm using as an access point only and I have all the wireless on my Verizon supplied router turned off.  I have a 4000 Sq foot house, and Verizon put the router in the basement which is also where I have the netgear router.  I have an ethernet cable that goes to the upstairs where I had tried two different wifi extenders from netgear and it was just a disaster that didn't work well so they were both returned.

What I want is something that works like a mesh network in that I want to put another router upstairs and have them both have the same SSID and allow the devices to always connect to the best device.  (It's also important to me to have a single ssid for 2ghz and 5ghz).  Mu-MIMO is also important to me to support my brand new macs.

The question is... can I get another AC8000p, as an access point, give it the same SSID and will it work like a mesh network?   Or am I better off replacing this with an ORBI system or some other mesh type technology to avoid my blind spots and get the best connectivity?

Re: R8000P and Mesh

Does the ISP modem have wifi and a router? if so, these should be disabled.

When you had the extenders, did you disable any beamforming, smart connect while trying to install the extenders? Some extenders don't work correctly with smart connect enabled.

How big is the house? SqFt?

You can get another same model router and configure it for AP mode and use the same SSID and PW, however you will need to enaure that each radio between the two units are using different channels and a far away channels as possible. It won't be a true MESH system. However can work this way.

I have an Orbi system with 1 Satellite. Works great in my 5000sq ft two story house
