R8000P with ISP Static IP

Greetings!

I am struggling to get my router working on my home network.  I am trying to connect to an Arris modem and my ISP has given me a static IP.

I currently use an old Apple Airport Extreme, which works, but it is slower than my internet speed is capable of, so I choose to upgrade to an R8000P.

Unfortunately, I am not savvy with internet protocol, so I enlisted Netgear's help desk, got a ticket and spent over an hour on the phone trying to get connected to teh internet.  The router works fine on the local network, but fails to get internet.

We've tried connecting a computer directly to the modem to confirm the modem's IP address.  That worked for the computer.  The setup for Static IP on the router matches the setup used on the computer (to the best of my understanding), but the router refuses to connect to the internet.

The help desk appears stumped, so I am hoping that someone here might point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Looks like it is solved.

I reset the router and let the "genie" do the setup.  It saw the static IP and prompted me for the IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS.  Once entered it sprang to life.

Thanks to everyone who chimed it!!!

Ok.  Did they tell you that you need to configure your router with
static IP parameters, or can you still use DHCP for the router's
WAN/Internet interface?

How is _it_ configured?

Did you contact your (unspecified) ISP?  Cable-TV providers can be
fussy about (or fearful of) different (or multiple) devices connecting
to your cable.  You may need to provide a MAC address to your ISP.

The non-psychics in your audience can't see any of that "setup".

Or the ISP refuses to allow your new router to connect to its
network.

Re: R8000P with ISP Static IP

Thank you for the reply.

The R8000P firmare is the latest.  I don't have the number before me as the unit is disconnected at the moment, but I did check that it was.

The ISP provider is Spectum Communications (formerly Brighthouse) and the modem is Arris model DG1670.

Ye, I did inform Netgear help-desk that I was using a static IP and they guided me to the setup, which seems pretty straight forward.

Withou spilling the beans on the specific numbers, my provider gave me:

IP address 2x.xxx.xxx.xx4   <== my static IP

Subnet Mask 255.xxx.xxx.xx2

Default Gateway 2x.xxx.xxx.xx3  <== The Apple calls this the router address and I believe it is the IP address of teh Arris modem.

DNS Severs 75.xxx.xxx.1

                    75.xxx.xxx.2

The router mode is DHP & NAT not sure about the modem settings.

I will contact my ISP and see if they need something that I don't know or have suggestions (i.e., MAC address of the new router).  This may take a day or two as we are fighting fires at work and long hours make getting my router working difficult.

Thanks again.

Re: R8000P with ISP Static IP

I should add, can you suggest what questions I should be asking my ISP?

I know that understanding the questions is at least 50% of the battle.  If I know what I should be asking I can at least try researching them to better understand.

Thanks everyone!

One of these?

Amazon.com: Arris DG1670A Touchstone Data Gateway Bulk Packed: Computers & Accessories

That looks like a modem/router.  See all those LAN ports on the back?

Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.

This explains some of the other drawbacks.

What is Double NAT? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

To avoid that, you have two quick options. Put the DG1670 into "bridge" (modem only) mode, or use the R8000P as a wireless access point.

I would sort that out before worrying about the settings for the internet service.

Re: R8000P with ISP Static IP

Ah!  This community is helpful.  Learning a little of what bridge mode means.

That makes sense about the router/modem conundrum.  Before I bought the R8000P I had the Spectrum tech out to fix a different issue.  I had also asked that he open specific ports for me on the modem, but suggested that he should disable the Arris internal router instead.  That was what he was supposed to have done, but maybe it didn't get done or didn't get set up correctly.

I'll contact Spectrum and have them confirm the modem's settings.

I appreciate the education here.

As always, an actual version number would be more useful than your
opinion of what's "the latest", today.

So, not a modem, but a modem+router ("gateway").

> [...] I did inform Netgear help-desk that I was using a static IP

   Not what I asked.

> [...] Did they [your ISP] tell you that you need to configure your

What works/fails if you connect a computer (or two) directly to the
DG1670 (and don't connect the R8000P)?  Actual IP address(es)?

> Withou spilling the beans on the specific numbers, [...]

That'd all be more useful if you revealed "a.b" out of "a.b.c.d".  A
couple of digits is much less helpful.  No reason at all to hide any of
a subnet mask.

If the DG1670 is acting as a (NAT) router, and you configured the
WAN/Internet interface of your R8000P with the same IP parameters as the
DG1670 is using on its WAN/Internet interface, then any communication
between the R8000P and the outside world would be impossible.

> IP address 2x.xxx.xxx.xx4 <== my static IP

Are all those "x...x" things the same?  That lower octet (".d") might
be useful info, too.  Did you get a _block_ of addresses from your ISP,
or a _single_ address?  You're discarding too much useful info for
secrecy.  What your provider _actually_ gave you, and actual settings
from the DG1670 might be required info.  Consider sending a private
message with _all_ the details.

Those would be the usual one-router options.  (But if your ISP is
giving you a block of public addresses instead of a singe address, then
things get more complicated and/or unusual.)

Re: R8000P with ISP Static IP

Firmware is V1.4.1.30_1.2.26

The modem/router is set to bridge mode.  I confirmed that with Spectrum.  The Spectrum agent reset and reconfigured modem in bridge mode just to be sure nothing was amiss.

Using one of my Macs directly wired to the Arris modem (modem in bridge mode) I was able to access the internet with the computer configured as a static IP.

> [...] Did they [your ISP] tell you that you need to configure your
> router with static IP parameters, or can you still use DHCP for the
> router's WAN/Internet interface?

No, they did not tell me how to configure my router one way or another.  I don't think DHCP works, at least it hasn't when I tried setting it that mode on the router or the PC.  The Airport Extreme is set up as "Static" and so I did the same with the R8000P.

So, the Static IP is 24.227.xxx.xx4  (where x is a number from 0 to 9)

The default gateway is 24.227.xxx.xx3 (router/modem address)

The subnet is 255.255.255.252

If you want/need specifics I can email them.

My ISP has a block of static IPs reservd for me.  I am only using the one, but I don't know/understand how that might affect the setup for the Netgear router.  Furthermore, I don't understand why the Airport Extreme or the Mac computer have no issues working directly with the Arris modem using the static IP parameters above.

Also, Nighthawk does not recognize the internet, yet the internet LED on the machine is white whereas the home screen in the "Netgear Genie" progam says the internet port is not connected.

Many of the other folks around here don't know/understand much about
that sort of configuration, either.

> The subnet is 255.255.255.252

So, that's a block of four, of which you can use one?

In a block that small (with only one usable address for you), I
wouldn't expect many complications (which I would for a larger block).
It does limit you to connecting only one device (computer, router, ...)
(at a time) to the DG1670, but that's normal.

> If you want/need specifics I can email them.

Probably not critical.  I'd guess some arrangement like:

      24.227.W.xy2 (reserved)
      24.227.W.xy3 gateway
      24.227.W.xy4 usable
      24.227.W.xy5 (reserved)

where "x" could be { 0, 1, 2 }, and "y" could be { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 }.  (If
that's wrong, then a private message with complete addresses might be
helpful (to me).)

In such a case, I'd expect that a static WAN/Internet configuration
on the R8000P like the following would work:

      IP address 24.227.W.xy4
      Gateway 24.227.W.xy3
      Subnet Mask 255.255.255.252

(And the DNS server addresses, too, of course.)

If that sort of static configuration works for your Mac and/or your
Airport Extreme, then I'd expect it to work for an R8000P, too.

Put any client device (Mac or whatever) back to using DHCP, and
restart it after the router/device swap.

> Also, Nighthawk does not recognize the internet, [...]

What is "Nighthawk"?  The R8000P, or some app, or what?  What,
exactly, does "recognize the internet" mean to you?  As usual, showing
actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

> [...] yet the internet LED on the machine is white [...]

   "the machine" is the R8000P?

> [...] whereas the home screen in the "Netgear Genie" progam says the
> internet port is not connected.

What, exactly, is your "the "Netgear Genie" program"?  Are you using
a web browser to talk to the R8000P, or what?

I don't know exactly how these things decide to declare "Internet
Connected", and this is an atypical configuration, so I wouldn't bet
much on the validity of the various "Internet" indicators.

Re: R8000P with ISP Static IP

Looks like it is solved.

I reset the router and let the "genie" do the setup.  It saw the static IP and prompted me for the IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS.  Once entered it sprang to life.

Thanks to everyone who chimed it!!!
