R8300 Port Forwarding set up but not working
The Model is really a Nighthawk AC5000 R8300 but it would not allow me to enter that.
I am trying to use openvpn, so port 1194 is the port I really want open but I have tried 4 ports.
Port numbers 943, 1194, 5631, and 5632.
We have Comcast, with a Netgear CG3000DCR and a Nighthawk AC5000 (R8300) connected to it.
I have set up port forwarding on the Nighthawk and on the CG3000.
None of the ports show open with Telnet when addressing either unit
and when using portchecktool.com none of the ports are open as well.
I have tried it with the CG3000 in bridged mode and added remote management on the Nighthawk.
When checked with Telnet, none of the ports that are forwarded work are open but the remote management port is open.
At this point I think it is the Nighthawk router that cannot port forward.
Re: R8300 Port Forwarding set up but not working
Moreover, since you have two routers--the one built into the CG3000DCR and the R8300--you'll have double NAT. There are 3 options:
1. Forwarding the port(s) from the CG3000DCR to the R8300. Then forward the same ports from the R8300 to the device.
2. Put the CG3000DCR into bridge mode and set up port forwarding on the R8300.
3. Put the R8300 into AP mode and set up port forwarding on the CG3000DCR.
Usually #2 or #3 are recommended.
