OpenVPN has announced that they will be ending support for MD5 certificates in April of 2018. If that means that I will not be able to use the VPN feature of my router, I am wondering if there will be a firmware update that will replace this outdated security method.

Hi AlbertShym,
I am sorry for the confusion. What I meant was the NETGEAR will be supporting the new certificate that OpenVPN uses before it stops supporting the MD5 certificate.
