Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

Hi this is my first post to the community. I've been using Netgear routers/switches for years. I purchased a Nighthawk R8500 early Dec. 2015.  Yesterday my 2.4 ghz devices could no longer connect to the router. My 5ghz band works fine. The problem is that I have a few older items that cannot see the 5g network so I need the 2.4ghz band. The devices keep cycling through (connecting, optaining IP, Drop). I tested this out on numerous devices and am pretty sure it's the 2.4 ghz band. I updated to the latest firmware (V1.0.2.54). I downgraded to ealier versions as well.  I have performed numerous resets. I came across this board today and have tried a few suggestions with no luck. I had to go back to my old WNR3500.  Are there any other options out there?

Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

@Odinson Can you try to upgrade to the latest firmware (1.0.2.54) and do the following reset instructions below.

1. With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on the back of unit for 30seconds.
2. Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds.
3. Power on the unit while STILL pushing the reset button and count for another 30 seconds before letting it go.

Let us know what happens.

Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

with 1.0.2.54 firmware same problem:  cycling the router, drop connection, cant connect to wifi 5/2,4 - wrong password and after one hour the router is from downside very very hot. Dowgrade the firmware to 1.0.2.30 and no problems.

p.s. when I flesh new firmware I always do factory reset and never put backup from old firmware.

Hi ElaineM.  I tried your steps.  I still can not connect to the 2.4 Ghz band.  The 5 G band works fine.

Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

Thanks ElaineM for following up.  I tried both options and I am seeing the same results. 2.4 ghz band broadcasts but I am unable to connect to it. 5G band works fine.

Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

I also have fully working 5ghz channels, but 2.4 ghz does not connect to the internet, even though the signal strength is high.  I tried change the fragmentation as another thread suggested.  I have not tried turning on access control as another thread suggested, but I don't see how that would help since I am not suffering "no connection" but rather "no connection to internet".  Thanks for any help you can provide.  Also, is there perhaps a beta firmware newer than V1.0.2.54_1.0.56?

Beta?  Not yet.

Try a 30-30-30 reset (Google it)  and manually configure router (do not use a saved configuration file)

No luck.  Should I submit this as an issue myself?  If so, how do I do that?

Re : R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

Hi,

I'm testing the V1.0.2.62, everything works fine, maybe you need to rename the tittle of this topic as "R8500 Beta FW" in place of "R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28"

Re : R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

If there is a new Beta out, a 62. It needs to be a new thread and like this one, have a link to d/l it with the change log as the first thread. Seems like the .28 thread should end. Every new version should have it's own thread, not piggyback on another, it just causes confusion and makes it hard to find new firmware. So, bring on .62! I'm still on .28 because it has been absolutely rock solid for me, but it's time to update for some of the new features. Please tell Netgear to start a new thread and link to the Beta .62, thanks.

Interesting does it support MU-MIMO? Will it released to people who signed the NDA? Thx!

The NDA Beta website will be closed in few days (6th May), I will check if we can open a thread for the last beta FW.

Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

I fixd my 2.4Ghz connecting but no internet problem.  I had to change to no encryption and then I use access control with default blocking of new connections.  This is not an ideal answer, but at least I can use 2.4ghz devices now!  I sent a support ticket about this, so hopefully this bug can be fixed in the next firmware.

Any luck?  I am having big issues with 2.4 dropping.  I'd really like to see if the new firmware resolves the issue.

I tried 30-30-30 reset and it still does the exact same dropping.

My 2.4Ghz is SLOW at about 15 (should be 60).  5Ghz is fine and wired is fine.  I've tried everything except the 30-30-30.  Perhaps the firmware update with fix the problem.

Hi Grimmace,

There is a new official FW 1.0.2.54 in the download center for the R8500.

Can you installed this last version to see if your issue is fixed or not

Thanks,

Re: R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

I've read through this thread and I haven't really seen much info/feedback regarding testing of MU-MIMO in beta firmwares.  I'm not trying to make this into a hardware post, but I am looking for input regarding the futureproof of the firmware.

Once Broadcom's MU-MIMO drivers are fully functional and ready for prime time, do you think the R8500 has a shot against the R7800 in MU-MIMO aspect,  or is there no guarantee/too early to tell?

Edit:  Honestly, It's time.   It seems like too many people are downplaying MU-MIMO, saying there are barely any devices which support it.  I find this incorrect.  All new flagship phones that have been released in the past year support it, (including the iPhone 6S, Nexus 6P,  and more) And guess what, I'd say most traffic now-a-days is from mobile devices.

When you have a bunch of these on your home network, it probably helps when you have a laptop not on MU-MIMO transferring large files, and when you have a device streaming.

Re : R8500 Beta FW V1.0.2.28

I wouldn't call V1.0.2.54 new, though it is the latest offical release... I have to say, 102.54 has been rock solid for me! I'm curious if many of the issues might be related to heat? Ever since I moved my router to a vented shelf on my server rack, every problem I had evaporated. Might be something to test? Current uptime is 20 days! I steam HD for about 3 hours from my plex server every night via 5Ghz radio #2, and I steam radio all day on 5Ghz radio 1... Still get WAN hiccups that last for maybe 10 seconds when downloading big files. I live in the sticks with ADSL so it's hard to pin that down but I'm not getting retrains or CRC's during?

Ant new firmware in the works for this router in regards to official MU-MIMO support? Thx...
