R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

Just noticed R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122. I am unable to find any comments in this forum for this firmware udate. My NETGEAR x8 R8500- 100NAS works just fine with current 1.0.2.116.

Enhancements / Bug Fixes:

  • Added support for SHA256 certificates in lieu of MD5 for OpenVPN
  • Includes security fixes.

Do I update or leave it alone? I do not want to brick my couple month old router. Any word of wisdom on this update would be most welcome.

I installed this firmware two days ago, it made my 2.4 band useless. I had some issues before, but this finished it off. I WOULD NOT install this update./

You have two choices stay on that FW and factory reset or go back to the previous FW.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

Thanks to all, for your input. The experience “21hawk” is describing (much appreciated) is what I am trying to avoid.

“21hawk”  hope you can downgrade your FW and/or factory reset to get things working. Please post as what solution worked for you.

I know I will update it in the future, but not just right now as my schedule does not allow me to have internet down and to start tinkering with the router. Especially being warned even so, it is one only one case so far.

Not even sure what Netgear means by vague statement “Includes security fixes”.

My 3 annoyances (listed below) with current firmware are not even addressed, and who knows if they ever will be.

1) In a log [Time synchronized with NTP server] states updated every 2 hours to the second. I think this is rather frequent.

2) No lease time, which I find odd. Most of the peripherals have reserved address in my setup, but for Guest Network, I would like to have some control.

3) Login time, way too short for the novice like me with a new router.

Cheers to all

Ugh... I wish I found this thread sooner. I used to have complete 5G coverage on all 3 floors of my house, it would seem that all coverage has dropped by about 30-40% Which sucks since my office is in the basement and I can't even get 2.4GHZ signal down here anymore... I really hope I can roll back.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

Welp, I was able to downgrade and I have noticed a significant boost, especially in the 2.4GHz band (I'm not finished testing the 5GHz). the only 'issue' I had is that I needed to re generate my VPN certs but I expected as much.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

Thank You for chiming in with your experience FiddleStix48

Glad the downgrade worked for you and I am awaiting your analysis of 5GHz band

if you find the time to post.

I have upgraded firmware from R8500-V1.0.2.106  to  R8500-V1.0.2.116 when router was new out of the box. That was only because it was a replacement for my first one which I sent back to Amazon due to the first one not working out of the box. I figured, if I have problem upgrading it, router will be going back again and I will be done with NETGEAR.

My pleasant surprise was, wow this is a best router I ever owned (minus the few shortcomings I listed in my previous post). Covers the whole house, no more repeaters,

extenders and so on.

It is seldom, I do not upgrade firmware on most of my equipment due to my nature of tinkering. However this router I am treating as a poisonous snake and giving it a wide berth.

There may be others with positive experience. Hopefully they will let us know.

Cheers,

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

Right back at you @Ratz!

I agree, I love this router as I was able to get rid of all my wifi extenders and the VPN is awesome!

After rolling back, I'm still having range issues with the 5 Ghz band Smiley Sad

Not really sure why, however, everything else (including the VPN) appears to be functioning as before. At least I now have full coverage again in my house (albeit 2.4 Ghz)... looks like I'm going to need to upgrade to the next firmware release when they fix this one, hopefully I'll get my 5 G back.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

I am not sure if this will make you feel better or not, but 2.4GHz works throughout the

whole house without any issues, where 5GHz fades in various corners.

I Goggled “2.4ghz vs 5ghz” way back and accepted this as normal. This is what it said.

“The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. 5GHz provides faster data rates at a shorter distance, whereas 2.4GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds”.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

My 2.4 problem is mostly failing to authenticate, no ip address or repeatedly dropping a strong connection immediately after obtaining an ip address, but yes, understand that 2.4 is slower.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

21hawk , I feel your pain, and I am grateful for your post which likely saved me some grief with the new FW. I have experienced the authentication problem with other routers, especially with D-Link DIR655 in the past, but never with this particular router.

The answer/action by aalexandrebeta is most sensible. Were you able to do that? It appears it worked for FiddleStix48. At least we know that downgrade is possible.

Reset to factory settings and reconfigure the router in both cases, weather you stay with new FW or downgrade to previous FW.

Please keep us in the loop.

My 2.4 & 5.0 is failing to authenticate, no ip address, or does connect but no internet access, or repeatedly dropping a strong connection immediately after obtaining an ip address. This occured after upgrading to 1.0.2.122 from 1.0.2.116. im am going to downgrade back to 116 tonight and reset the device.

Re: R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.122

Thank you cj1973 for participating and letting everyone know your experience.

Were you able to downgrade without dificulty?

I am still on the sideline with v1.0.2.116. However I did post under new topic, here

for a new Firmware available, but so far no one replied.

Cheers,
