R8500 bricked after attemted firmware upgrade

Windows 10,R8500 Nighthawk X8.

Tried to do a firmware update. Now cannot get into router. Tried to reset but still no luck. I have tried all the suggestions that can find. It should be a matter of software. What is the latest suggestions on getting this up and running? Worked great for about 13 months. Then I got an email from Netgear to upgrade the firmware. Big mistake. Now I would like to get any firmware to work.

A direct line to the router from the computer allows me to see the router but when I tried to use the tftp2 I never get the 'green' light. The little window says it cannot find the router. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

What does the power LED on the router look like?

Have you tried the "paperclip" factory reset?

If you have to use TFTP, it might be easier to use the Windows built-in TFTP client.

I assume that you have read the tftp instructions, you don't say.

How to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using TFTP | Answer | NETGEAR Support

That is a bit out of date in that it does not tell you that Windows has a TFTP function built in, you just have to enable it.

  • Control Panel
  • Programs and Features
  • Turn Windows features on or off
  • TFTP client - enable

That's probably easier than retrieving software from a website.

Re: R8500 bricked after attemted firmware upgrade

The power light is solid amber after turning on the router.

After a minute or so, it turns solid white.

If I do the tftp2.exe procedure, the power light never turns green. It starts the amber/white cycle all over again and repeats this continuously. So I never get a chance to use the tftp2 to try to upload the firmware.

I think the reset worked because the admin/password are back as the default values with which it came.

I have nothing connected to the computer but the router using number one ethernet port, not the yellow Internet port.

Have I left out anything?

Thanks,

What does that mean?  "see" how, exactly?

Its LED colors are not very current, either.

I, too, would try the command-line TFTP client.  It would also be
nice to know if you did the whole static-IP-address configuration on the
Windows system (with details), and if you tried a test like:

      ping 192.168.1.1

How, exactly, did you determine this?

Nothing connected to the router except the computer?

Let's stick to one discussion here.

Duplicated questions won't get you better answers.

I found a way to at least get the router back online with earlier firmware.  If you look at my post it's a start.
