R8500 new firmware R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75

Bug Fixes:

  • Improved security protection on device web server.

Note: To avoid wireless disconnect issue during the firmware download process, NETGEAR recommends that firmware upgrade be performed on a computer with wired connection.

  1. Write down all the settings which you changed from the default values, since you may need to reenter them manually.
  2. Using the Download Link below, download and extract the new firmware to a convenient place such as your desktop. The filename after extracting is R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75.chk

    Download Link: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R8500/R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75.zip
  3. Log in to the router using a Web browser. The URL is http://www.routerlogin.net.
  4. Click ADVANCED tab > Administration > Firmware Upgrade.
  5. Click Browse and find the file you just downloaded.
  6. Click Upload. Do not interrupt the upgrade while the router does this step.

Have you tested it? If yes can you try a speed test and see if they fix the IPV6 speed problem. I just yesterday.... factory reset to defaults after dumping a beta FW and would rather not start over again.

Right now I am running DDWRT. Waiting for someone else to try.

Especially interested in the QOS.

Nope IPV6 is still broke. All this is is a band aid for the resent security issue found.

I believe searay provided logs back in October when this was first reported.   He said he was given a beta but nothing has happened in 2 months to address the issue. I can submit another report if needed.

Re: R8500 new firmware R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75

Port 68 shows closed not stealth again!

Factory reset, then it was stealth.

Cold reboot - its open again.

DDWRT Stealth no matter what

I see this as a security flaw as it sends a responce to a port scan.

For those testing, unplug router - reboot then try the scan at shields up.

unacceptable.

Using firmware 1.0.2.54 and 1.0.2.86 it's reporting as stealth from our end.

We also did reset and cold boot and still it shows as stealth.

Will you be able to get the same result if you bypass the router?

Re: R8500 new firmware R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75

Elaine,

I factory reset, manually put in all settings, it shows stealth.

After a few days I rechecked, it shows closed not stealth. I factory reset

again, again manually put in the settings and it was stealth again. I then simply

unplugged the router, plugged it back in and Port 68 shows closed not stealth.

Can you simply unplug the router wait 10 seconds, plug back in and see if that happens to you.

Re: R8500 new firmware R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75

According to our engineers, port UDP 68 must be open on the router to allow the DHCP reply from the ISP. How it shows up in a scan is depends on how it was programmed. This is not a big deal, because the router will only really pay attention to this port right after making an outgoing DHCP request and until a reply is received. So looks like in our case we show the port as Stealth/Open when the DHCP communication is occurring initially then it gets closed once it’s no longer needed for DHCP communication.

Re: R8500 new firmware R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75

Elaine,

Then why when running DDWRT it ALWAYS shows STEALTH? (Running this now)

If you are getting port scanned and it shows open, or closed but returns the signal

its a securtiy threat.

Re: R8500 new firmware R8500-V1.0.2.86_1.0.75

@chascent Different router manufacturers and open source FW implements it differently. It looks like DDWRT choose to report the port as stealth at any given time.

If you strongly feel that this is a security threat, I suggest that you submit this inquiry so that our engineers can validate.

You may email them at techsupport.security@netgear.com.
