ReadySHARE storage creates temporary files

Question

I have an R8500 (firmware V1.0.2.128) with a 250GB USB drive (NTFS format) connected to the router via ReadySHARE storage. Access to the files is working great from my Windows 10 computers. The issue I am having is that when I open a file on the drive, a temporary file is being created that does not always go away after I close the file. I have not determined a pattern - it seems to happen whether I open/edit a file or if I just open/view it. Also, it does not happen all of the time - sometimes the temporary file is not there after I access a file.

It is not causing any functionality issues (as far as I can see) but it is annoying. After a while, I go in and delete all of the temporary files that have been created since the last time I did it. I am not running the latest firmware; I experienced wireless stability issues with more recent firmware updates so I am running the firmware that has been most stable for me. If my issue has been addressed in a later firmware issue, I will weigh whether I want to keep living with it or take a chance with messing up my wireless network. Does the drive's format (NTFS) matter? I can change that if necessary.

Does the same thing happen when you work on files on USB drives connected directly to the PC rather than through ReadySHARE?

This sort of behaviour is usually down to the software that you are using to access files. Some things are better than others at housekeeping.

Then there is the habit of Windows – if that is what you are using – to leave rubbish lying around. It isn't really something that ReadySHARE has much to do with.

michaelkenward- Thanks for the reply.&nbsp; No, the behavior only occurs when using ReadySHARE.&nbsp; When I use USB drives directly attached to my PC the temporary files are not left behind.&nbsp; I also have a home server (WHS 2011) that I use very often and no temporary files are left behind.&nbsp; The files are being generated when I use the standard MS Office products (Excel and Word mainly).&nbsp;One thought - Are temporary files normally hidden?&nbsp; If so, it is possible that I am looking at the hidden view on the ReadySHARE so I see the temporary files?&nbsp; If I look at the hidden view on a USB or on my server, I wonder if I will see temporary files created.&nbsp; Unless you know the answer, I will try this out an report back.&nbsp;Thanks!

My experience is that temp files are visible. Local and ReadySHARE USB. But I like to see stuff.

Here at least tmp files go away when I close Office files.
&nbsp;
Of course, there are times when a file might not close properly. And that would leave junk lying around.

michaelkenward&nbsp; - I checked and I am not viewing hidden files on ReadySHARE, so the temporary files can be seen from the normal view.&nbsp; Just to be complete, I looked at the hidden view of both a USB drive and my home server; there were no temporary files in either view.&nbsp; Finally, I opened a file on the USB and my home server in Excel to see if a temporary file was being created; I did not see this happen (normal view nor hidden file view).&nbsp; I was a little confused by this because I assumed that MS Office products created temporary files to keep track of changes in between file saves so it can recover them if something went wrong (i.e. computer shuts down while editing).&nbsp; Maybe those temporary files are not saved in the same directory as the original file?&nbsp;It is puzzling to see these files being automatically created but not deleted.&nbsp; When I am done viewing/editing the original file, it appears to be closed properly given any changes I make are properly saved.&nbsp; Is it logical to assume that since the MS Office apps are not creating this temporary file when it opens a file on the USB drive and my home server that it is not creating a temporary file when it opens a file on ReadySHARE?&nbsp; If this is a good assumption, then this would mean that ReadySHARE is doing it.&nbsp; If this is not a good assumption, then why would MS Office behave differently with ReadySHARE than it does with other storage devices?&nbsp;Thanks!

Once again, it makes me think that Microsoft is doing things to confuse us all. So it&nbsp; might be worth looking into the settings in Office. I usually adopt the defaults.
&nbsp;
These days we are invited to let Office put things in the Cloud on OneDrive. I rarely go down that road. (We recently lost the Internet for a week thanks to storm.) So I have no idea how that affects things.

When it comes to ReadySHARE, it is dumb. It has none of the intelligence that we expect of fancy things like Office. So my inclination is to look elsewhere for quirky behaviour like this.
