Restore process needs to work for future firmware updates

I consider it a competitive disadvatage that the restore process for my Netgear wireless R7000 router (and by all indcations, all Netgear routers) require manually reentering configuration information after some firmware updates.

Instead, there should be version independent information stored in the backups along with meta data that would allow future update processes to update version independent information (e.g., stored IP addresses of dis/alllowed systems) along with meta data that would indicate during or just prior to the update procedure what feature information that differs between releases must be managed manually, ideally in a way the could be easily digitially captured and/or printed.

This would greatly decrease the customer inconvenience after excectuing a 'hard reset' on the routers.

Re: Restore process needs to work for future firmware updates

Thank you very much!

We would normally advise to use the backup and restore feature for ease of reconfiguration.

It just so happen that our engineers found that there is something on that firmware release that made it impossible to just use the backup and restore feature hence they advise to do manual configuration.

Moving forward, NETGEAR has taken note of this and will eventually use the restore function again for easy reconfiguration.

Re: Restore process needs to work for future firmware updates

I support this suggestion VERY much. So happy to read a quick responds from a Netgear affiliate!  😉

In these modern times, where the routers have increased functionality and onboard memory. A feature such as this, should be easy to add and really be a common industry standard feature, as there really is no excuse not to do it. And as said above, would make future firmware updates suddenly become a breeze, when it comes to re-configure the router back to the users own preferences.

A win-win situation, as there is no cons to such a feature!  😉
