And netgear sadly doesn't give a **bleep** about their customers. There are multiple threads about this and not a single tech support person on one to offer help. They're a disgusting company and I'm never buying a router from them after I have enough money to get a new one.

Have you tried logging into the router via the browser at 192.186.1.1? This seeme to work for me.

I haven't tried that yet. D

does it actually make a difference? Isn't that just the IP address of routerlogin.com?

Yes. That's the whole point.

routerlogin.com is the IP address for the browser's graphical user interface (GUI).

When you get into that address you can try the favoured way of updating firmware:

How do I manually upgrade firmware to my NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

Preferably do this with a wired link into the router's Ethernet.

"STILL"?  Is there something you're not telling us?

"Unable" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

"same" as _what_?  See "not a useful problem description [...]",
above.

Is there anything in any of this vague mess which suggested that
"logging into the router" was the actual problem?

Everyone might waste less time if someone/anyone would provide a
better problem description.

Not really.  "routerlogin.com" is a DNS name which a Netgear router
should resolve to its own LAN IP address, which, for a model Rxxxx,
would typically be "192.168.1.1" (which _is_ an IP[v4] address).  (But
it could be different.)  "DNS name" and "IP address" are spelled
differently for a reason.

An IP[v4] address is a 32-bit number, usually written as "a.b.c.d",
where "a", "b", "c", and "d" are decimal values in the range [0, 255].
A DNS name is (nearly arbitrary) text string.  They're usually pretty
easy to distinguish.

It might, if there's a problem with the router's DNS server, or if
you're using some other DNS server.  Whether it would make a difference
in this case (these cases?) would depend on what's actually happening,
which remains an enigma.   As suggested above, one or more useful problem
descriptions might spare everyone from pointless speculation into
irrelevant matters.
