Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

This for those having issues upgrading latest firmware via GUI and stuck with blinking white light. TFTP2 app instructions didn't work for me so I did it via Windows CMD
1- Download latest firmware file fromhttp://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R8000/R8000-V1.0.4.18_10.1.49.zip extract firmware file to desktop
2. To enable TFTP client in Windows 10, from the WinX Menu, open Control Panel and click on the Programs & Features applet.
In the left side you will see Turn Windows features On or Off. Click on it to open the Windows Features panel. Scroll down till you see TFTP Client. Check the box and click on OK.
3- Connect a PC wired to router via LAN and set it to have a static IP address (example 192.168.1.10). For Mac users, go to http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/22161/how-to-set-up-a-static-ip-in-mac-os-x/
4- Launch command by pressing Win+R and typing CMD
5- In command terminal type cd desktop
6- Now we need to put firmware on router using TFTP so we need to type following command tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT R8000-V1.0.4.18_10.1.49.chk
7- Router shall reboot post successful upgrade with all other lights working 😁

Your power led needs to be blinking white. Did you try resetting your router. Would also recommend doing 30 30 30 reset. Once power light is blinking white then it is possible to tftp.

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

I have only tried setting 192.168.1.10 at Properties, Local Area Connection. Just now tried an older version firmware R8000-V1.0.3.48_1.1.33.chk too.

Can you please tell me how to ping from Desktop ?

From desktop press win+r key and type CMD. In that Windows type ping 192.168.1.1 -t

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

Have to tried unplugging the router and let it sit for a while like 10 minutes or so. If yes and still it's Amber power light then it might be and issue.you can request for RMA

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

Two other things: Noticed your dns entries were blank, try loading with the 192.168.1.10 valies as your system may be looking for a lookup when none exists and at the CMD prompt execute 2 commands: ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns as these will make sure that it doesn’t have stale information in your system when it tries to find the router.

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

Hi, sorry to tell you that it still does not work. Apparently it cannot communicate with my bricked router as the power light is always amber.

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

This does not work as a plain vanilla solution as on my R8000, it refused the connection completely. If I used ftp and signed in using the admin credentials for the router (anonymous login was refused) and I need to get a firmware in for dealing with router issues. The manual way of using the web portal works perfectly for me. I gave up on tftp.

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

The steps provided do not require credentials they are for TFTP via Windows cmd. And if something else worked nothing better than that but instructions are for R8000 stuck in recovery mode with white light blinking and TFTP2 app not working as it was in my case. Cheers mate

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

I think it's time for you to go for RMA if still under warranty. Can be hardware related.

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

I don't know - whatever I tried with tftp each and every time, it replied "Connect request failed"  I used my workstation wired to the router via a Netgear Gigabyte switch (wired) nothing else on the connection.  And the command line I issued was :

tftp - i 192.168.1.7 PUT R8000-V1.chk 192.168.1.1

and the tftp replied as stated above.  It tried to connect but failed.

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

Read the instructions again, TFTP command you tried is incorrect. Also you may also consider sharing if you router is in recovery mode or not. Recovery mode is when power light blinks white whereas the Amber power light means hardware failure

Re: Steps to update R8000 stuck in recovery mode

I am not sure whether my R8000 is in recovery mode. The amber light remains on. Attach is the LED light captures, it seems to be looping after I did a 30-30-30 reset.

A day ago, after about 7 hours of no activity, the router did go back to normal. After several power on/off I can get into the setup page. I can see that the firmware version is 1.04.18. I restore my previous settings and reboot, sadly it is "bricked" again. I have been waiting for another 36 hours now. If ever I can login again, the first I will do is to flash it back to an older version firmware !

Another question about TFTP, before we exective the command prompt tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT R8000-V1.0.4.18_10.1.49.chk, do we need to press the reset button ? Right now I got the Connection Failure Error.

Netgear support says you need to Power On while holding down the reset button and wait.
