The three different password and resets processes

If the following statements are not correct please advise:

There seems to be some confusion around the different passwords when usign NETGEAR router , web site and NIGHTHAWK Mobile App. The reason is that there are all different objects so there are three different passwords and resets processes.

  1. NetGear.com website:
    • First Time users: Must create an account using an email address and password.
    • Already have an account: Login with the email user and password when the account was created.
    • Use Forgot your password link (displayed when login in) if you don't remeber your password. when you select the link an email will be sent to the email you enter in the next window after selecting this option.
  2. Router Password Browser access 192.168.1.1:
    • First Time accessing 192.168.1.1 use default "admin" for user and "password" for password. The recommendation is to chnage the defula password to do so go to the  ADVANCE TAB and select the Set Password menu option to change it.
    • Next time you type 192.168.1.1 in your browser a popup window will displayed asking to enter user and password; use admin as user and the password you use when you change it.
    • If you forgot the password: find the reset buttonusing in the back of the router and with a paper clip push it to reset the admin user password to the defaul "password" and login using admin as user and password as password.
  3. Mobile App: I am using NIGHTHAWK app, if you are using the same admin user then  you should use the same password you use when setting up through the browser using 192.168.1.1. Some users create a different user the first time they access the app. This user/password combination and it will be considered a different user than the one in the NetGear website and admin/password one.

Please let me know if the above statements in anyway confuse you or help you understand the NETGEAR passwords settings.

    • Use Forgot your password link (displayed when login in) if you don't remeber your password. when you select the link an email will be sent to the email you enter in the next window after selecting this option. You don't need a NG account to log into the RBR and set it up. Its only if you want to use the Orbi mobile app.
    • Another way to reset the PW: Wire connect a PC to the router and factory reset the router using the back push pin button. Hold it in for 15 seconds then let go. Power OFF the ISP modem for 30 seconds than back on. Wait for the WHITE led to slowly pulsate on top of the RBR, then log in to orbilogin.com using a web browser and walk thru the setup wizard. This time write down all important information for safe keeping later on.
  2. Router Password Browser access 192.168.1.1: This is correct.

The NH app doesn't support Orbi systems. You have to use the Orbi app for Orbi systems. FYI, the Orbi app is limited in functions and features. Any advanced configurations needed have to be done at the RBRs web page with a PC and web browser.

Please let me know if the above statements in anyway confuse you or help you understand the NETGEAR passwords settings.

  1. NetGear.com website:  This is correct.
    • First Time users: Must create an account using an email address and password.

    • Use Forgot your password link (displayed when login in) if you don't remember your password. when you select the link an email will be sent to the email you enter in the next window after selecting this option.
  2. Router Password Browser access 192.168.1.1: This is partly correct.
    • First Time accessing 192.168.1.1 use default "admin" for user and "password" for password. The recommendation is to change the default password to do so go to the  ADVANCE TAB and select the Set Password menu option to change it.
    • Next time you type 192.168.1.1 in your browser a popup window will displayed asking to enter user and password; use admin as user and the password you use when you change it.
    • If you forgot the password: There are two methods of resetting it. (1) when the password is entered incorrectly three times, a window will open offering to "Recover" the password using the product serial number and two security questions.  If this does not work (perhaps because it was set up incorrectly), (2) find the reset button using in the back of the router and with a paper clip push it to reset the admin user password to the defaul "password" and login using admin as user and password as password.

This section has issues. (1) Although the user 'signature' indicates the Nighthawk R8500 product, this post appears in the Netgear "Orbi" forum. Customers who have Orbi's use the Orbi "app", not the Nighthawk app. (2) Typical use of the Orbi app is to use the Netgear login credentials with the app, rather than the web interface credentials.  This ties the app to the product registration and permits the use of "Anywhere Access" through the app.  Creating a new Netgear credential for the app would seem to be supurfluous.

Thanks for taking the time to prepare this.  It is a frequent question topic on the forum.
