Time machine and Airport Express support

I'm looking to replace an Airport Extreme. I back up to time machine (a hard drive attached to the AE) and I extend my network so I can stream music to a number of airport expresses. Can anyone tell me what Netgear router would support BOTH of these function?

TIA,

David

Re: Time machine and Airport Express support

Might be time to get a NAS. Netgear is in the process of removing Time Machine support from routers so they can have the money grab called Armor available. I got a NAS years ago and never been sorry. No problem backing up my MACbook.

Re: Time machine and Airport Express support

Thanks for the tip. Would it support my airport expresses for extending the network?

What particular NAS product did you get?

Re: Time machine and Airport Express support

Actually, I'd rather stick with the router connected drive while I can.

Why?  Is there some actual problem which you are trying to solve?

   How, exactly?

   True.

   "it"?  Would _what_ ...?

If you use your (old, slow) AirPort Express units as wireless access
points, then they should work that way with any router.

The NAS just sits on your network as an Ethernet attached device. Doubtfull it would work with the airport express, it would work in place of. I personally have a QNAP NAS.

   True.

Nonsense.  An Airport Extreme is a _router_ with a USB port for an
external storage device.  (It's much like many Netgear routers, except
that its software/firmware may work better than anything from Netgear,
and Apple is unlikely to remove support for Time Machine from _its_
product.)

An Airport Express is a smaller/simpler/cheaper router, which, I
gather, offers USB printer sharing, but not storage sharing.

      https://support.apple.com/airport

I don't know how the Airport Express units are configured in this
case: wireless access point, router, ....

If another router were added to this system, then I'd guess that the
Airport Extreme could be configured as a wireless access point (too?),
which would allow its storage-sharing capability to be retained.
Whether that would make any sense might depend of why we're doing
anything in the first place, hence my original question.

Re: Time machine and Airport Express support

I’m not being clear apparently. I’m replacing the extreme with another router. I’d like to:

1. Connect a usb drive to the new router to use with time machine on my various Macs.
2. I want to extend the network created with the new router with my airport express devices to stream music.

I’m looking for a netgear router that will support both functions. Is there one?

   Not responsive, certainly.

Speaking of clear, which part of "Why?" was unclear?

As previously noted, Netgear has been removing support for Time
Machine from recent firmware versions on multiple router models.  That
alone would suggest looking beyond Netgear for a router to meet that
requirement.

On the other hand, see "If another router were added to this system,
[...]", above.

So far as I know, which may not be very far, your AirPort Express
units should work about the same with any router as with the AirPort
Extreme.  That might, however, depend on how they're configured, about
which I (still) know nothing.

Re: Time machine and Airport Express support

I dumped NG due to the Removal of features I use to shoehorn in Armour. That and the miserable track record on firmware releases were the last straw.

Not only was Time Machine removed, also DLNA server which is needed to stream media from the USB drive depending on the clients being used for those files.

Might want to look here, https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-a20/#overview , could fit your needs. Costs less than comparable NG products (like the R8000) and has what seems to be a better Warrany and support.

Re: Time machine and Airport Express support

I've decided to go another route. But, for the record, your quickness to take offense where not was offered and your general belligerence isn't helpful to anyone. Perhaps you might want to check your attitude before you post in the future....
