USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I just got my router and configured it and downloaded the correct firmware...

I have a Toshiba 2TB router that is a USB 3.0 router.

I plugged it in to the USB 3.0 port on the router and the led light doesn't go on and it is not recognized. I plugged it in to the USB 2.0 port and the light pops on almost immediately and it is recognized...

Any idea why I can't use the 3.0 port with a 3.0 capable external HD?

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I can't offer any help, but I have exactly the same problem; the USB 3 port was working with my 64 Gb stick until Saturday - when I installed the latest firmware - now it's stopped working, but does work in the USB 2 port, and a USB 2 stick works in the USB 3 port.  Something about the f/w has messed it up.

I'm currently doing someting with the network.  But when I've stopped I will reflash the router.

Could you try that?

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

What is flashing the router? How do you do that?

I started a ticket with support since I just got the router, they said it's a hardware defect and I should replace the router. I don't think it's a hardware defect I believe you are right that it is something with the firmware update. I would hate to go back to the old firmware...

Just re-install the most recent firmware manually.  You can download it from here: http://www.netgear.com/support/product/r8000.aspx#Firmware%20Version%201.0.3.48

Don't forget to back up your settings before you do it though.

Let me know how you get on, and I will try it in a few days (currently re-uploading 8TB of NAS data...).

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I too am trying to use my USB 3 port to connect a Seagate 8tb backup plus hub and its not being reconized.

Firmware Version
V1.0.3.54_1.1.37

It is reconized on the USB 2 port.  I reinstalled the firmware per your suggestion.  Any other suggestions to get this working?

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

(Work Around) I have the same USB 3 problem - drive not recognized. The "work around" that always works for me is:

1. Power down the router (pull the plug).

2. Remove any device in the USB 3 port.

3. Power up the router and let it "settle" (wait).

4. When the router is fully powered up - plug your USB 3 hard drive into the USB 3 port.

This has always worked and the hard drive is recognized - however - you must do this procedure any time you power down or re-boot the router.

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I have tried what you suggested minus unplugging it (reset the router by the button in the back).  I will try your exact steps.  If this doesnt work hopefully I can load up a previous firmware version.

Kind of suprised this issue doesnt seem to be addressed by Netgear as, IMO, this is a pretty big functionality that isn't working.

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I have a router of R8500 and just the same problem with USB 3.0.
Why NETGEAR so long can't solve this problem? And interesting it is a problem of software or iron?
I take out the USB 3.0 USB stick too and I insert it after the router reboots.

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I give up , this router is so unstable its beyond a joke. The USB shares keep disappearing and the router is cooking all my usb drives. Netgear support is F'ing useless and every product I've ever bought from them has never worked properly. Now I've got to buy a new router.

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I also just got an R8000.

I 'see' a different problem. Now to start with, I probably followed the 'fix', in that I plugged in a 32GB Flashdrive (USB 3.0 into the USB 3.0 socket) today. It did 'light' and the router says it is indeed there:

Network/Device Name:     \\readyshare

Available Network Folders
Share NameRead
Access
Write
Access

- no password
All
- no password
U:\share\
\\readyshare\T_DriveAll
- no password
All

T:\ESD-USB29.5G25.9G

That is the T:\ drive. However I also have a USB 2.0 1TB External drive connected. Basic Genie page shows me READYSHARE Status as Ready. But it isn't the case? I can not run in a CMD prompt on W10 NET VIEW and see ANYTHING. Only command that will work is NET VIEW  \\MyComputerName or its IP Address:

C:\>net view \\192.168.1.30
Shared resources at \\192.168.1.30
Irv's 8700
Share name  Type  Used as  Comment
---------------------------------------
C_8700      Disk
K_8700      Disk
L_disk      Disk
Users       Disk
The command completed successfully.

Any other computer name or IP Address returns Error 53:

C:\>net view \\192.168.1.1
System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

According to TechNet:

==================

At the command prompt, type: net view \\< hostname > where < hostname > is a network resource you know is active. If this works, your name resolution is probably not the source of the problem. To confirm this, ping the host name, as name resolution can sometimes function properly and yet net use returns an Error 53 .

==================

Ping DOES work....

C:\>ping readyshare

======================

Suspect the Router f/w or the Master Browser function.

Removed the 32GB Flashdrive and it all works again:

Something is REALLY wrong with that firmware. That is for sure.

@JamesGLor @ChristineT, someone should look at this. Sounds like Support is no help on this problem.

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

I too have the same issues. Was working at one point and then it failed after a firmware update. My external HDD 2TB Seagate works fine but I have a tiny USB that's 128GB, one of the small white Samsung ones that doesn't work, in fact...it heats up the USB very quickly similar to one of those old fashioned car lighters that you stick in the socket. I am a IT Specialist and this one is beyond me but I believe it's a firmware update. Recommend support to replicate my issue to look into this. @admin @administrator

I also have the R8000P

Firmware Version

V1.4.1.24_1.2.20

Also love the "pay to win" support model that this company has. In this day and age, this is ridiculous, especially for the amount we pay for some devices. Atleast a ticketed email system would be nice.

I don't think you have the same problem. At least if you were responding to me with the NET VIEW problem right before your message.

That problem is completely different... and it has to do with MS disabling SMB 1... nothing more... in Windows 10 Fall Creator version.

I suggest you open a new thread/subject if you were not replying to my message. At first glance, a problem with the USB drive that had worked disappearing and a flash drive heating up is completely different, and possibly due to the heat issue, different from others here. You could even be having a h/w problem.

Re: USB 3.0 port not working with external HD on X6 R8000

But it works on any other device with no issues and once I plug it into the router. The Readyshare does not detect the USB at all in the router. But it detects a 2.5" HDD via USB. This all occured after the recent two firmware updates. I will pull the version later.

After you put on the other version, no matter what the outcome, create a NEW thread... it is different from this one.
