Unable to get Amazon Echo to go online with NightHawk X6 R8000 router

I am unable to get my Amazon Echo online with my Nighthawk R8000 router. It used to work and then, a couple of months ago, stopped (possibly after a firmware update of Netgear router - now V1.0.4.28).

I spoke to Amazon support a couple of times, but kept giving up as it was so painful! Tried again today and then also spoke to VirginMedia support, as my Nighthawk router is connected to my VirginMedia modem and I was not sure what level the problem was at. It turns out it is definitely the Netgear router - I can get online when I disconnect my VirginMedia modem from the Netgear router and connect to it directly in router mode. And I can also get online using my phone's HubSpot.

I've tried rebooting everything numerous time as per instructions from various support calls. And checked that router and modem correctly connected. Nothing has worked. I get as far as connecting to the internet and it says it is unable to connect.

I know there have been some previous similar posts. But I have not found anything that seems to offer a solution. I would be very grateful for any advice - given in simple layman's terms please ...

Thanks!

Did you try a settings reset (nad manual reconfiguration) of the
R8000 after the firmware update?

I know nothing, but if you suspect the new firmware, then why not
load older firmware?  Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your
model number, and look for Downloads.  (For older versions, under
Firmware and Software Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)
Find the kit(s).  Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release
Notes" file for instructions.

Thanks for suggestions (and sorry for my slow reply).

No, I did not try a settings reset after updating firmware. How do I do this?

I guess I could try to load the old firmware. But does that just mean I have to leave it stuck on the old firmware as new firmware updates are released? Is it not important to keep firmware up-to-date?

Thanks.

What it might mean is that you've found a problem in a particular
firmware version.  If so, then you can make an informed complaint to
Netgear (with evidence).  If, "as new firmware updates are released",
you try them, and they work better, then you have my permission to use
the newer/better firmware.  If they don't work better, then you still
know what does.

If the (typically useless) Release Notes which accompany a new
firmware release describe some new feature or bug-fix which would be
important to you, then you'll need to decide what's more important to
you.  Or, if you observe some other problem with the older firmware, and
observe that some newer firmware solves that problem.  If the
"up-to-date" firmware works less well for you than some older firmware,
then which would you choose?
