Unable to update Firmware

Trying to update Firmware on my R7000 Nighthawk.  I've followed the instructions online to no avail.  It's showing that a new firmware update is available but when I try the Router Login (User Name/Password) it doesn't work.  It shows the default for the password is "password" but that doesn't work.  I've also tried the Router Password Recovery by typing in my serial number but when I press Continue nothing happens.  My router has all white lights on except for #1 which is red?  Please help, I know my internet will be better if I can figure out this update.  Thanks!!

_Which_ "the instructions online"?  "online" is a very big place.

_What_, exactly, is "showing" what, exactly?

Again, what is this "it"?  What kind of "doesn't work" is this?  What
are you doing with this password?

As usual, showing actual actions with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

Various people have reported problems with the Password Recovery
scheme on these devices.

"red" or amber?  What's connected to that LAN Ethernet port?

   Optimist.

Are you able to get logged into the R7000 using a web browser?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for "Types of Logins";
"Top and Front Panels" and "Table 1. LED and button descriptions"; and,
if you can't get logged in, "Factory Settings".

If the "easy" update procedure (ADVANCED > Administration > Router
Update > Check for new version from the Internet ...) doesn't work as
expected, then visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and
Software Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the
kit(s).  Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file
for instructions.
