Unable to update Firmware

Received an email from Netgear that firmware on router was out of date.  Followed instructions to the letter, in a Windows 10 environment, and the Nighthawk app takes me to a screen that states "Firmware Out Of Date," and instructs me to click on "openrouter.net."; however, each time I click on "open routerlogin.net", it switches to a screen that says it is "Detecting Product," and about 1 second later, it returns to the previous screen, which again instructs me to "open routerlogin.net."  I never get past this screen and am never allowed to enter my password, etc.  Thus, it appears that it does not detect my router, even though I have confirmed that the router is connected to my cell phone.  I am not an IT guy, but this strikes me as absurd.  Is Netgear that incompetent, or am I doing something wrong?

   Router model?  Firmware version?

> Model: R6900|Nighthawk AC1900 Smart WiFi Router

   Is that accurate?  R6900?  R6900v2?  R6900P?

Can't see them.  Have no idea what you did.

   That seems unlikely.

I'd skip the app, and use a web browser.  Less unreliable software
that way.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read?  Look for "Update".

Those possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.

Re: Unable to update Firmware

Do not use Apps, do not use smartphones and do not use wifi to update the firmware. Use the Web GUI of the router and go to http://192.168.1.1 - login with your pass and do to Advanced -> Administration then to Update Firmware

Routing: NETGEAR R7800 - Voxel Firmware 1.0.2.88SF & Kamoj addon
Switching: 2x NETGEAR 8-ports (GS108v4) / 1x NETGEAR 16-ports (JGS516v2)
Desktop: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - Server: Intel Core i7-7700K - NAS: Intel Pentium G4400, 16 TB

Re: Unable to update Firmware

I agree with @microchip8.Wired is better than wifi. And apps can be hard to set up.

If possible use the instructions in the release notes for your firmware.

Your footer says you have an R6900. In which case, start here:

R6900 Firmware Version 1.0.2.6 | Answer | NETGEAR Support

Note that there are several versions of the R6900. The firmware is version specific. You have to get the right one.

Just another user.

My network DM200 -> R7800 -> GS316 -> PL1000 -> Orbi RBR40 -> Orbi RBS50Y -> RBS40V
