Unknown devices connected to router

When looking at the device list there are a number of devices connected that are not known.  For instance I can see my iPad is named but several are not named. How can I find out where or what those devices are?

You could enable access control, block a device, and wait for someone
to complain.

For a device which you can find/identify, and whose IP address can be
determined, you can do that, and then look for a match in an Attached
Devices list.  (For example, on a Windows system, run an "ipconfig"
command.)  If its MAC address is printed on it, then use that.

For a device which you can find, shut it down and/or remove its
power, and see what goes missing from an Attached Devices list.

You could attempt to access a web server at the IP addresss of a
mystery device.  If you get a response, then it might provide some
information.  (Or FTP, or Telnet, or ...)

For a potentially useful hint, you could feed the MAC address of a
mystery device into a tool like the one at: https://macvendors.com/

"where" may be a little harder.

If you record the MAC address of a new gizmo when you get it, then
you can save yourself some effort later.

Do you have UPnP enabled? It might be related. I enabled it on my R8000 and discovered in Windows 10 I had a 'phantom' printer connected (I didn't look at the device map though) via UPnP. Disabled UPnP and it went away. Might be related, don't know?

Windows also under Printers and Devices sometimes will show a phantom phone or display (also in NETWORK on Windows Explorer) and some are hard to get rid of.
