I have a new router (R7000P AC2300) that I would like to configure just as I did my current R6400 and quickly. My thought is to use the configuration file from my R6400 and restore it to the R7000P. Is this a supported practice or will it not work? My thoght is the .cfg file could be used to move my configuration to a new version of the Nighthawk series routers and have the configuration done and up and running quickly.

Not supported. Very unlikely to work. Different hardware, different firmware, different file contents, possibly different file formats.
It should be safe to run the experiment, but I'd expect it to fail.
For this and other reasons, it pays to take notes while configuring a device like a router. Some people suggest taking pictures/screenshots, or saving the HTML, of pages on the management web site, but such methods often fail to capture all the relevant data.

Thank you for the response. Yes, I have captured the settings with screen shots. I just thought if you could use a config file to quickly migrate the configuration to a new router it would be a great time saver. If it's not supported, then I won't even attempt to try it. I'll just manually configure the router with the screenshots as a reference.

It would, but Netgear doesn't try to make it possible. (Probably just as well.) Just as an example, on my D7000[v1], the ".cfg" file is (mostly) plain (XML-like) text, while for others (R7000, for example) they look as if they've been compressed. There is no single scheme.
And that's just the format, let alone the contents.
