XR500 in a lan to lan configuration - how to get the ntp working?

In order to get a few devices, eg printers, to work across the house, i set my XR500 up in a lan to lan configuation with the ISP modem/router. Modem/router is at 192.168.1.1, and XR500 is at 192.168.1.2, and the Modem router does the DHCP. Pleased to say that worked and evrything in the house can connect to everything. But.... the XR500 is unable to connect to any NTP server, so the date is all wrong, which is a problem for the VPN I wish to install. As soon as I put the XR500 wan port back on the router modem, the NTP kicks into action and brings the date up correctly. I was hoping just to connect it back lan to lan and the revised date would stick, but it doesnt and goes back to dec 2020 as it was before. I'm thinking I need to find a way for the XR500 to find a connection to a NTP server though some config, maybe static routing, but now I'm a little beyond my current comrehension. Any ideas would be very much appreaciated!

Have you considered the potential advantages of using the documented
method of configuring the XR500 as a wireless access point, instead of
your ad hoc "lan to lan configuation"?

You might start with an oft-neglected resource:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTFM

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Look for
"Use the Router as a WiFi Access Point Only".

You have posted your message in the section of this community given over to Nighthawk WiFi Routers. (This is easily done, given Netgear's complicated community structure.)

Many questions apply to different types of device, so you might get responses here, but you might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your hardware, in the appropriate section for your device. That's probably here:

Nighthawk Pro Gaming Routers - NETGEAR Communities

This is especially important for these devices as they run with DumaOS rather than the standard Netgear firmware. The DumaOS people are very active in that section and can probably respond more quickly.

I will ask the Netgear moderator to move your message.

ah, I'll take a look at that, thanks! I have some ethernet connections at the XR500 as well; does making it an AP no longer permit the use of the ports?

You can configure NTP settings in Settings -> Administration -> NTP Settings.

I'm not sure if it will work, but you could try settings the ISP modem as your NTP server?

Alternatively, you could just use the default Netgear NTP server?

Disabled Features on the Router when set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Support

The XR500 is an expensive "gaming router" with many added features that would doubtless disappear in AP mode.

Only you know if those features are important to you.

The ports would work, but probably not much else.

many thanks- I can only get that to work when the XR500 is plugged into my modem/router though its WAN port.

"that"?  In a forum like this, pronouns can get detached from their
antecedents.

The hypothetical problem is that the router expects to contact an NTP
server using its WAN/Internet interface, whether it's in router mode or
WAP mode.  That shouldn't be a problem for the documented WAP mode,
which uses the WAN/Internet interface for the connection to the
main-router LAN, but would be for your ad-hoc "lan to lan configuation".

Features which involve router functions don't work when the router is
disabled/bypassed.  "Many added features", like, say, shared
USB-attached storage, shouldn't care.  As that "Disabled Features" KB
article says.

Define "much else"?  I'd go by the list in that KB article, and not
by vague assertions about "many added features" or "much else".
