Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

Which setting should I use when configuring the LAN IPv6 IP address assignment:
DHCP Server or Auto Configure?
Comcast Xfinity is my ISP.

Re: Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

I’m asking about the LAN device IPv6 address assignment setting, not the type of IPv6 connection which is DHCP. The choices are use DHCP server and Auto Configure. This configuration is under LAN setup. From what little information I can find, using the DHCP server to assign the IPv6 addresses to the devices on the LAN supplies them with more info than the Auto Configure setting but is not supported by all ISPs.

Re: Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

ISPs have nothing to do with the LAN side IP assignment. If you get an IPv6 prefix from your ISP on the WAN side and if you don't have a good reason to use DHCPv6 on LAN, use SLAAC instead (Auto Config). SLAAC is made of the IPv6 prefix you get and the rest gets "made" by the computer itself (consisting of the date with privacy extensions)

If you have Android devices at your place and want them to also have an IPv6 address, your only option is SLAAC since Android doesn't support DHCPv6 (yet)

Re: Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

Correction, SLAAC is IPv6 prefix + the rest made of the date, MAC address and privacy extension

Re: Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

I'm using Auto Config.  No issues with IPv6.  My LAN devices get both assignments where supported.

Re: Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

Thanks for the info, still experimenting and it looks like Apple devices can't get an address with the DHCPv6 client server.

Re: Xfinity IPv6 Configuration

Update

The Apple devices do get ipv6 addresses when the router is set to use dhcp to serve them to the lan devices but after a while those addresses won't route. Acts as if the devices and router lease times might be out of sync.
