external hard drive for a r8500 router

Getting a netgear r8500 router looking to attach a 2tb external drive for two windows 10 computers to use as a back storage device and tips on which hard drive to get and it's best settings to make it work or do I need more then one hard drive?

Another vote for NAS here.

USB attached storage is pathetic in comparison.

First check compatibility:

I am seeing issues when an HDD formerly attached to computer is attached to a router, because users sometimes miss format or put an incompatible type of format onto the HDD and can't be recognized.

What type of partition?

What do you think of a nas server then or a waste of time  of course it could serv more a data backup drive for just two windows 10 computers?

Router-attached storage has its place, but my ReadyNAS was a great purchase.

Consolidating my data on the NAS makes the data easier to manage, and allows me to implement an automated backup plan for the PCs on my network.  I back the ReadyNAS up to other ReadyNAS, and use CrashPlan Cloud backup for disaster recovery.  I couldn't do that with router-attached USB drives.

The USB external HDDis a short term solution and an unsafe one, for people unwilling to be annoyed by technology. But a good old NAS provide what everyone expect in term of safty redufdancy and features!
