iPhones disconnect from wifi when asleep and during downloads
I have been experiencing issues lately with Apple devices (two different models of the iPhone) regularly disconnecting from my wifi network. Typically, it appears this is happening when the phones are on standby/asleep and when downloading data. I have completely replaced one phone, going through a complete software and then hardware 'reset' to eliminate the phone(s) as the issue. I've also powercycled my router and made sure that I have current firmware.
ISP: Verizon Fios
Software Version: V1.0.1.48_10.0.46
Other: Running Smart Connect wireless for a single SSD for both the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands and I have Cloudflare DNS set on the router
Appreciate help figuring this out. It's quite annoying not to be able to back up my phone and to chew through cell data.

Re: iPhones disconnect from wifi when asleep and during downloads
Greetings,
The router itself boadcasts wireless continiously unless wireless is set to turn off by schedule. The latest versions of both iOS and Android aggressively manage power and background tasks.
The first thing I would do. Disable Smart Connect.
Give each broadcast a separate SSID name
Pick broadcast channels for each (not Auto)
Other considerations:
Depending on the version of iOS, you may have different power management options that could influence or dictate when the device sleeps, what tasks are allowed to run and what interfaces such as bluetooth or wireless run. Enabling Do Not Disturb might also affect some connection behavior.
Updates and firmware - Allowing the router to update automatically (if supported) and/or using the Auto-Check and Update feature, Genie or via wireless connection has proven to be unreliable. Manual update from a machine directly connected via ethernet is preferred. If the FW was update automatically, I'd reflash, reset and perform more testing. In addition, applying saved back up configurations from different FW versions can introduce problems. Not sure if one or more of these apply in your case.
Sync with iTunes. Disclaimer: I carry an Android phone, everything is clould based so no iTunes to run, update, worry about or sync to. If the system iTunes is running on is asleep or turned off, no sync can occur. (Obvious)
You can also review the router's logs which should show each time a deives connects and receives an IP:
[DHCP IP: (192.168.1.103)] to MAC address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX, Friday, Dec 21,2018 20:02:41
I'm not convinced its the router, but I don'y have this model and haven't followed its FW history. I think you have some more testing to do.

Re: iPhones disconnect from wifi when asleep and during downloads
If you are talking about iCloud backup, my iPhone only backs up to iCloud when connected to wireless, so no cell provider data used. I think that is the default setting.
iPhones do go to sleep and may disconnect from wireless, but when woken up will reconnect, or at least they should, mine does on my network, but it is not a Netgear controlled network.
