netgear nighthawk 7000 wan connecting to internal ip?

Hi. I am having a strange issue. Sometimes, my WAN link to my ISP goes down and the router ends up getting a 192.168.100.10 ip. My firmware version is v1.0.9.88_10..2.88. Here is my log. Happened twice so far today.

It does finally get a valid IP and I get my connection back, but just wondering if there is something else happening here security-wise that I should be concerned about.

Thanks for looking!

does this happen with all your devices that try to connect to the network?

Re: netgear nighthawk 7000 wan connecting to internal ip?

Various CPE, ISP routers, ... default to a private subnet LAN if the connection to the Internet/ISP is "offline" or not properly provisioned by the ISP, and also run a DHCP server for this subnet. Here it's 192.168.100.0/24 and your router does get .10 assgined from that device.

What can be even worse? Other CPE default to the common 192.168.0.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/24 network - then the Netgear routers will reconfigure their LAN to an alternate subnet - and the mess will be perfect. What seems to be a commodity design, it's a nightmare in a LAN with more than just a few comuters or mobile on the LAN.

oh ok, so the netgear firmware gives itself that IP when the ISP connection is screwed up? and then keeps on trying to reconnect?

No, the ISP CPE (e.g. cable modem, fiber box, ...). The "Internet" does shrink to minimalistic set-up with the ISP provided CPE and your Netgear router.

the cable modem is mine btw, I bought my own to not pay rental fees. do you think it could be nearing end of life? or is this just upstream issues you think?

Re: netgear nighthawk 7000 wan connecting to internal ip?

Upstream (check with your cable ISP) issues, or local cable modem problems indeed.

If you have some access to the cable modem logs, you might get some insight, too.
