netgeat vpn network switch question
i have no idea how this works so maybe someone hear can help me figure it out. i have the netgear c7000-100nas modem router now and i have a security system connected thru a 24 port gigabit network ...
thanks does netgears r7000 ac2300 have any type of security? i see other router brands that have firewalls and some type of security that is free built into the devices and for life with updates often? my c7000 never gets any security updates and has got 1 firmware update, just after that update the attacks on my device were almost nothing and then about a month after that firmware update the attacks started agian, now i get so many i have to turn it off often to clear out the logs just to have decient wifi. and i see lots of neg feedback on amazon for that model also. that is one reason i'm looking at turning off the wifi on the c7000 unit and installing a seperate router so i can get security updates more often. i get dos attacks at a rate so fast that i see pages of them everday. just today i again pulled the plug 30 minutes ago and i have 4 pages of dos attacks. i have the ip address set to get ip address from isp maybe i need to set it to static? the wan page has all boxes unchecked. but this unit seems to have limited setting from what i have learned router have. unless i'm reading them wrong. thanks.
A couple of things I might be able to help you get your arms around. Routers (like the 7000 series) do not get security updates as such. They do get firmware updates that address security issues. For the plain R7000 the firmware updates come from Netgear via a subcontractor. These firmware updates have been messed up for some time and often create more issues than they resolve. That is why the bad reviews. The hardware design is several years old but still good. For the C7000 the firmware and updates are controlled by the ISP. You did not indicate who is your ISP?
There is no need to record DOS attacts in your log. Shut the record option off and ignor them. Your log getting full could be part of your problem.
Obtaining the IP address from your ISP is the customary setup. Unless you pay your ISP a premium, a static IP address may not be an option.
If your router is providing good internet access via your ethernet connections, it is doing its job. Wi-Fi issues are another can of worms entirely and depend a great deal on the Wi-Fi environment you are operating in. I do not know what you consider "decent" Wi-Fi? The Wi-Fi environment covers everything from the quality of the client device (the device you are connecting via Wi-Fi), to home constuction, electro-magnetic noise, neighbors, and many of the settings in the router itself. In particular settings for the bells and whistles "features" such as QOS, auto-connect, auto-channel selection, bandwidth, and others.
