orange light comes on when i plug in my office phone in a different room.

Hi.  I have an Arris modem connected to my netgear router located in our main floor office.  When i plug in my office phone (VOIP) into the wall jack in my upstairs office, an orange light turns on, on the router that corresponds to whichever port (1, 2, 3, or 4) the Cat 5 cable is plugged into that runs from the back of the router to the wall jack.

When I unplug the phone upstairs, the orange light turns off downstairs on the router.

I have no idea.  I have had a Spectrum tech out twice and they didnt seem to now what they were doing and said it is a phone issue.  When I plug the phone directly into the router, it works.  When I move the phone upstairs...orange light of death.

Please help if you can.

Thanks!

Not a very detailed description of anything.

Define "works".  A white port LED indicator?

What makes you say "death"?  An amber port LED is not necessarily a
problem.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for "Table 1.
LED and button descriptions" to learn what an amber port-status LED
indicator indicates.

Hard to inspect those cables from here.  Assuming that your "my
office phone (VOIP)" has a gigabit Ethernet port, a Cat5e cable which is
shorter than 100m should be good enough for a gigabit connection (and,
hence a white port LED indicator).  A gigabit cable does need all eight
wires to connect; a slower connection can work with only (the right)
four wires connected.  Long cables with quality lower than Cat5e might
have trouble supporting a gigabit connection.

If you are saying that the port led on the router is amber when the phone is connected and goes out when the phone disconnected this normal if the phone uses a 10/100mb network connection speed, it would be white if the phone was a 1gb connection for its speed.

Is there any other issues other the color of the lan port connection on the router?

Possible a bad pair in the cat5 cable but a network cable tester would tell you fast.

Is this what is happening?

I reckon that @William10a has nailed this one.

The LEDs on the Ethernet LAN ports change colour depending on the speed of the connection.

There is support material, including a manual, for the R7000 somewhere at the end of this link:

Look at the table LED and button descriptions.

Basically, it means that you can relax. There is nothing untoward going on.
