Following the instructions I was able to setup the opendns account but then I get this message "
This account doesn't have any Netgear devices associated with it

Which flavour of parental controls are you after? The free one, Circle or something else. (They recently announced yet another option.) That link is for the free version. It uses the Netgear Genie app, not the Nighthawk app.
Several issues, do you know that the Nighthawk app listed in your subject supports your modem/router? Netgear's own documentation is confusing. (There's a surprise.)
The support pages for this device do not include reference to either app.
It doesn't help that Netgear has messed around with parental controls since the manuals came out. (It now wants people to buy into its paid Circle service.)
The latest Nighthawk app no longer supports standard Parental Controls, only the paid for Circle.
This still works but if your device uses the Nighthawk App rather than the Netgear Genie you'll have to use the desktop genie program to manage the controls.
In general, a bit of a mess.
