r7800 smart connect flawed

Hi all.

When I enable smart connect on my r7800 router all my 5ghz devices connect at 300mbps. Even when I'm right next to the router speeds dont improve. My desktop which uses a wireless ac 9260 only connects at 300 too. When I disable smart connect and have two seperate networks my devices connect at the high speeds(1.7Gbps) like they should do. Surely Im not the only person experiencing this issue.

Re: r7800 smart connect flawed

Smart connect is bandsteering.

meaning it can move devices between the 2.4ghz and the 5ghz. It automatically starts devices on the 2.4ghz and then can transition them to the 5ghz based on usage/distance/rssi strength/etc.

When I first started using mine, it was terrible because my 2.4ghz is so congested. After a couple days, it got better as the devices that needed higher throughput were moved to the 5ghz automatically by the router.

But it isn't ideal for everyone due to the congestion issues.

What firmware are you on?

I enabled it a while ago and couldn't figure out why my wireless lan speeds were so slow. I'm on the most recent firmware.

Re: r7800 smart connect flawed

Smart Connect on NG routers is sub-par at best. I've seen quite a few folks disabling it and it fixes their issues. That's all I can say about it.

Routing: NETGEAR R7800 - Voxel Firmware 1.0.2.89SF & Kamoj addon
Switching: 2x NETGEAR 8-ports (GS108v4) / 1x NETGEAR 16-ports (JGS516v2)
Desktop: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - Server: Intel Core i7-7700K - NAS: Intel Pentium G4400, 16 TB

What version are you on? "the latest" changes.
Also, the R7800 got quite a few firmware updates/changes. If it hasn't been reset since they've all been done, many times that can improve performance.

I'm on v1.0.2.68. So you suggest doing a factory reset? is it worth doing a backup first ?

Re: r7800 smart connect flawed

I'm a fan of manually installing if you're having an issue with something. Main reason is, if you're having to reset due to a problem, potentially its either a current setting or old setting causing it. If you simply restore a backup, you're just re-doing that bad setting.

It doesn't hurt to have a backup just in case it does hurt but if there's an issue, a manual install is the way to go.
