Why? Says who?
> [...] and have no idea how to go about that?
That could depend of what you mean, which is far from clear.
General advice: You might have more success if you described the
actual problem which you are trying to solve, rather than asking how to
implement some particular "solution" ("update my router with a static ip
address"), which may have little or nothing to do with the actual
problem (whatever it might be).

Re: static ip update
Ok
I have a computer program that connects to my quick books. I have had a dynamic ip and when the power has gone off the program disconnects from my quickbooks and doesnt work. So i was told i need a static ip.
I ordered the static ip and now im left with a list of numbers like gateway, submit, dns, secondary. I need to enter these numbers into my router to make the static ip work?
I have the nighthawk app and in that app i can look at what numbers i am working off the dynamic ip but i cant figure out how to change any of it.
Thanks any help is greatly appreciated.

Is that accurate? Connected to what?

That tells me very little. "a computer program"? "my quick books"?
Are you talking about things which are on computers on your local-area
network (LAN), or things which are on some outside world server, or
both, or what? What needs to communicate with what? On whose
initiative?

"told" by whom?
"when the power has gone off" on what? Your computer? Your
networking stuff (which might include an R6080 router)?
You're talking about a static IP address for your router's
WAN/Internet interface?
> I ordered the static ip [...]
From your (unspecified) ISP?

Probably.
> I have the nighthawk app [...]
I'd avoid any Netgear-supplied app, and use a web browser.
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation. Get the User Manual. Read. Look for "Specify Your
Internet Settings" and "Manually Set Up the Internet Connection".
