Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
I just unboxed my new RAX30. Went into the router software and changed my DNS servers(OpenDNS) and set up my WiFi. This was on Monday. Wednesday my Ping time dropped significantly, from 4-6ms to 18-20. I waited for a day and retested with the same result. Power down reset the router as well as the fiber modem. No change. Pulled out my internet providers router to test and saw good ping times(6ms) consistently. Reinstalled my Rax30 and retested(20ms). Next, reinstalled the latest firmware(1.0.13.102_2), no change. Installed firmware version 1.0.10.94_3 and retested with a positive result. Tested at 5-6ms consistently.
It appears there is something that changed in the firmware update that triggered the issue. For the time being, I have left the older firmware in.
As an additional note: my internet service is gigabit fiber optics and my throughput, up and down are pretty consistent, download around 900-930gbs and upload 880-940gbs. I have had a few uploads come in really low, 150-250gbs. I just figure that is a busy server.
I tried tests on two separate Cat 6 cabled Desktop PC's running Windows 10 and 11. I had also tried flushing DNS.
It doesn't appear that it's a hardware issue since it works fine with the older firmware, but I'm no expert.
Any suggestions?

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.
Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed after newer FW was installed?

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
Modem supplied by the ISP is a Calix GigaPoint 503G. Same as the Mfg of the router they supplied(which works fine). The cable supplied by the ISP for interconnection between the modem and router is Cat6(which seems to work fine with either router).
Lastly, the Rax30 came loaded with the latest firmware 1.0.13.102_2 and seemed to work correctly for the first two days. What happened after that, I have no idea. At that point I reloaded the current firmware and rebooted with no change. It has been running on the older firmware for four days now and ping times are what would be expected (4-6ms).
The thing that I find really odd is, I have been running firmware 1.0.10.94_3. I decided to reset the Rax30 back to factory. After booting up, I changed my settings and went to Administration and ran a Check for new firmware version, it tells me that my firmware is up to date. Very odd since I know it came preloaded with a newer version.

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
At some point, manually load 1.0.13.102 then after that's installed, factory reset the router and setup from scratch using a wired PC and web browser. Be sure to not enable any features like, Access Controls, Armor, SPC or Traffic Meter. Just run some tests. Otherwise, use what works for you. Sometimes NG doesn't put latest FW up on there servers. They may remove it.

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
Thanks. I'll give it a try. Just FYI, the only changes I make to the factory settings are the DNS servers(OpenDNS) and WiFi settings. So it's pretty stock.

Try using ISP detected DNS vs custom as well.

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
Tried that, no change. Also, tried manually adding new firmware and doing the factory reset. still having issues. So, I am back to the older firmware. One thing that has me a bit nervous is many times that I run and speed test (any server), my upload speeds are very erratic, even with the older firmware. Download is pretty consistent. Makes me wonder if there is an issue with the router hardware. Normally I would say no, but last evening I was playing World of Warships and had it glitching the whole time and later that evening on Netflix, it did it again. Certainly could be server, but I don't remember this happening with my old Nighthawk. I already had my ISP run tests on my line before I bought this router, so I assume it's good. I'd use the Calix router, but it doesn't play nice with my home network. It drops my Nighthawk Bridge after a few minutes and doesn't recognize my HP wireless printer.
Just sitting here scratching my head. You would think with my 13+ years as a Network Tech and 15 years as an outside plant fiber Optic Tech, this would be easy.

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
I'd try a different model router to compare.
I presume if you game directly with the modem/ONT, all is good here?

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
The only alternate router I have is the ISP supplied Calix router which I have tried and it works fine, just doesn't like my Nighthawk bridge and HP wireless printer, so I don't use it.

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
I guess keep the older version of Fw loaded then. Might make contact with NG support and let them know the differences you see with newer vs older Fw.

Re: Degraded Ping Time on Latest Firmware
Thanks for the response. Good to know that it isn't just my unit. I haven't had a chance to contact Support, too much going on right now and it's seems to run ok on the older firmware. So for now, I will stick with what works. Hopefully it will be corrected in the next update.
