NightHawk RAX200 and Movistar+ TV Device

CASE

  • Router Netgear RAX200 connected to internet using a Movistar Askey HGU RFT3505VW. It is using an ethernet cable between ASKEY switch and RAX200 WAN.
  • Router RAX200 has IGMP Proxy enabled
  • Movistar+ device is Zyxel Nano 2112T, this model only permits ethernet connection that it is coneccted to RAX200 switch through a switch Netgear GS908 using a cable. It means: RAX200 -- > GS908 -- > Movistar+ TV device.
  • Netgear GS908 has IGMP Snooping enabled and it is no the cause of the problem.
  • Movistar+ TV device has access to internet because it is able to update its firmware, but you cannot see the TV
  • Movistar+ TV device requires IGMP Snooping enabled

 QUESTION

  • How should I config RAX200 without loosing its routing capabilities?
Model: RAX200|Nighthawk Tri-band AX12 12-Stream Wi-Fi 6 Router

Re: NightHawk RAX200 and Movistar+ TV Device

so right now you're cascading routers (Askey + RAX) and causing a double nat. Some streaming services have issues with double nat.

https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

and not sure about movie star but some ISP's require their own router be used for their streaming services.

Versus some allow you to setup a vlan for their services.

https://kb.netgear.com/29911/Configuring-VLAN-IPTV-setup-on-your-Nighthawk-router

so potentially you have a couple things it coule be.

1. the double nat

2. the streaming service vlan for your ISP.

Does everything work fine if the RAX is ran in access point mode? that fixes the double nat and is sometimes the easiest router to go with ISP's that require their own router for streaming.

Re: NightHawk RAX200 and Movistar+ TV Device

Well, this configuration works with a Netgear Nighthawk R8000, because you have an option to configure IPTV at: ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > VLAN/IPTV Setup
In the RAX200 looks like that this option hasn't been implemented, and due to it, it doesn't work.

I have seen that when you place the devize in the DMZ of the RAX200, some features of Movistar+ decoder works, being more detailed:

  • Movistar+ decoder connected to an ethernet port of RAX200, in this case the decoder is able to connect to internet and update its firmware.
  • Movistar+ decoder connected to an ethernet port (configured as DMZ) of RAX200, you can see the menu, and TV channel video currenly bein streamed, but you cannot see TV channels content that has been streamed before, also you cannot see series or movies.

Problems detected are:

  • RAX200 hasn't got the option of R8000 regarding VLAN/IPTV Setup.
  • Movistar+ requires IGMP Snooping
  • Movistar+ requires VLAN:
    • data ID 6 Priority 1
    • Voice: ID 3 Priority 4
    • IPTV: ID 2 Priority 4

This configuration regarding VLAN can be partially achieved, because Movistar router permits to assign two VLANs to a port, but RAX200 not, then if you have a switch connected to the ethernet port of the router, you cannot attach to it decoders (IPTV) and devices connected to internet (for example a media server over NAS) because only can work or IPTV or Internet connected devices, but not both.

It will be interesting to know if NETGEAR plans a firmware with the capabilities of NETGEAR R8000 or the possibility to have two VLANs over the same port
