NightHawk X8 and fibre to the curb

Hi all,

3 years ago I purchased a Netgear Nighthawk X8...an expensive purchase but it worked great. Recently we moved house and our broadband coonection changed from Fibre To The Node to Fibre To The Curb....my ISP sent me a new modem which has a WAN port for the internet, and it works well.

I have tried hooking up my X8 to the broadband box (using the Internet port on the back, there is no WAN port) and could not get a  signal. Is there a way around this and is it worth doing?

My ISP sent me a TP-Link VX420-G2V modem (which seems pretty basic)...is the X8 superior and better to use?

Thank you for your help!

Re: NightHawk X8 and fibre to the curb

That model already has built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

For your model router, Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the NightHawk Router products. Might be more likely to find someone who has a solution if the question is posted there:

Thank you for your reply! It sounds like I should just use the modem supplied by my ISP.

cheers,

David.
