Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

Two major issues after 1.0.3.80 upgrade:

A. Every time after reboot, the saved access control MAC addresses and access rights are completely and randomly corrupted. The only solution so far is to factory reset the router, which is very frustrating.

B. I tried to back up the settings to save some work after factory reset. But the backup file does not contain the saved MAC addresses and access rights at all! That means I have to re-enter a whole list of MAC addresses and names every time after a reboot. Can the support team include access control data into the backup file / restore process please?

A relatively less critical issue is the wrong password problem after switching to WPA3 (Personal). The router fails to recognize saved WIFI password. A fallback workaround is to use the WPA2+WPA3 option instead of WPA3 (Personal). Obviously it is a bug, however.

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

I followed a user's recommendation from another thread and reset the router, installed the latest .80 firmware and reset it again. Set up the router from scratch instead of restoring saved settings.

I then disabled/did not enable the following:

  1. Smart Connect
  2. 20/40 MHz coexistence
  3. Implicit BEAMforming

I enabled WPA2 and WPA3 security.

The router is working fine now. No drops if there is no activity and able to reconnect after going out of range.

Before my earlier post, I had reset the router and setup from scratch and it obviously did not work. I don't know if the combination of steps helped or the change in settings.

If anybody wants to troubleshoot without resetting the router, you could try disabling the 20/40 MHz coexistence (in Advanced --> Wireless Setup) and see if it works. A Google search of the feature led me to an unrelated forum where turning it off helped improve extender connectivity.

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

I follow the suggestions of @abelak and turned the 3 features off. Nows it works perfectly ! Thanks.

Whilst it's good to have a workaround, obviously there are bugs to be fixed and the backup / restore process remains deficient.

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

I agree @rplc. This is not a solution. Just something to ride over until a viable fix is in place.

It’s been almost 2 days now. There are no disconnections so far.

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

Hello,

I had a stable config with 64 f/w (but with iPhone11 issues and some WAN errors) with

  • dedicated channels for WiFi (not auto)
  • AIRTIME FAIRNESS disabled
  • all other options set (AX, 20/40 coex, BEAMFORMING)

When I tryed 80 f/w with same config it worked between 1/2  - 1 day and then  "attached devices" was corrupted and later web interface down...

For now I'll not try 80 f/w anymore and I'll wait for a robust f/w with good fixes and good evolutions.

I have an RAX40 in AP mode connected to C7000. Since FW update, the RAX40 just isn't there - it is completely invisible and nothing will connect to it (in AP mode). Super frustrating. Worked fine until FW update.

Hi Ron,

I would like to get help, please break down the steps how to do:

open router's webinterface >>> Advanced >Administration -> Router Update

browse to location of unzip files and select the binary image and Upload it

I don't know exactly how to do it, because I am not so knowledgeable. Appreciate.

Hello,

I'll not be able to give you all steps ... prefering speaking FRENCH...

But if you go inside manual : https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RAX40/RAX40_UM_EN.pdf

Page 89 you'll find howto manually upload f/v=w

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

Hi Ron,

Thanks for helping me out, I still could not resolve the issue. In the process, it's showing it's not connected to the internet, it did not work with the MAC address of the router, I tried with another MAC address from my Linksys router, that did not work either. Linksys router working fine, no issues at all. Any thoughts, what I should do, thanks.

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

I add myself to the list of users who can't connect the EAX20 to the RAX20 with firmware 1.3.80.
Even disabling all the parameters proposed above the result does not change, the router is only a little more stable.
Workaround? Downgrade to the previous firmware version and block automatic updates.

The fact that they didn't even test their devices before releasing a firmware version is quite depressing.
How sad.

Hi @Christian_R,

I have been having similar issues; not sure when the router drops started but it seems like a couple of weeks. I was restarting sometimes once a day at first then it increased to every day and yesterday had to restart three times. I have now reset the router back to factory setting and accepted the firmware Version V1.0.3.80_1.0.1 update during the install.

I have not changed any default settings except for naming the devices and attaching icons, I have done this on the web and on the app; however I see that the smart lock icon is showing up generic in the app and when I try to change it on the app, it doesn't stick.

I'm on the latest os's on a mac and ios. I have 4 wired devices and eight wireless devices.

Thank you for looking into this.

Still same issues with a rollback. I really can’t believe how awful this is. Went through level 2 tech support. Company stands behind their products a whole ninety days! Lol. The software for this RAX 40/35 is a mess. I wish we could get refunds. This is a joke. Lost a customer for life.

very disappoint with netgear.  they should TAKE DOWN this defective firmware that is causing wifi drop.  they don't because they want people to contact them and charge them for simple reverting back.  take the firmware down and issue a new one once is fixed....very bad service netgear....

Reveted to 62 no luck.

Reset to Factory settings, no luck.

Went back to my little old Trendnet, no problems now.

Whish I nevee spent so much on this device, at least it was on a Black Friday sale.

Can't disable coexistence because my BluRay uses the 20Mhz network and my other devices use the 40.

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

ok, what i learned is to download the older firmware version from Netgear website, look for the older version

V1.03.64_101 and go into the Admin settings of the route and update firmware manually.

After i did that everything works again back to normal. It tooks me a few days of playing with setting and resets, but today i downloaded and tried the older version and it works

give it a try. Also turn off auto updates so it doesnt happen again, and hopefully another update will come out

stay away from 3.80 version

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

For myself I had the same drop and disconnects on the older firmware. I suspect DHCP authentication issues when a device tries to reconnect after being off or away. It tries to assign the old IP to it, fails, and gives is a 169.xxx etc address, which means authentication failure. I’m not a network engineer, but DHCP service should be one of the first things you get right. Hope they find fixes... soon

Re: RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log

Picked up this router a while back to use as an additional simple access point. Updated the firmware to 1.0.3.80 and then configured it to serve both regular and guest wifi signals on 2.4 & 5ghz. Having the same issue I've seen lots of threads about, after a while the router stops responding and all my connections drop. The first few times seemed to be about 8hrs apart. After that I fiddled with firmware changes and had a few days stable until it crashed.

For a few of the crashes I've taken UART console logs. Seems to be an issue with the firmware. The firmware hits some kind of error condition and the router ends up in a loop which can only be fixed by a power reset. A few samples from the UART console:

First sample (error snippet only, I have a full log available though):
